Summary
It’s no secret thatFortnitehas established itself as a quasi metaverse with its numerous collaborations. At any given moment, you can be facing a team of Spider-Man and John Cena while your character is Goku with R2-D2 as your back bling. That said, while Fortnite has had numerous successful collaborations, as well as real-life activations, like concerts, not everything has been a smash hit. In fact, there are a lot of collaborations that quite frankly missed the mark and have since been long forgotten.
Taking to Reddit, Fortnite’s most devoted fans shared the collaborations that are the most forgettable. Some of these involve well-known IP, like Ghostbusters, which makes their failure all the more surprising. Elsewhere, collaborations with the likes of Mistborn and Major Lazer were likely DOA from the moment they were announced.
Wait…That Was In Fortnite?
To start, the most forgettable collaboration as decided by members of the FortNiteBR subredditis Mistborn. Originally released as part of Chapter 2 Season 6, Kelsier from the Mistborn series was a purchaseable skin. The character is from a series of fantasy novels by Brandon Sanderson, and if you had never read the series before, then the collaboration likely went over your head.
That said, while the collab was forgettable, it did push some gamers to check out the real-life novels. “Right. Looked up Mistborn because of the collab and loved the magic system, so I read all the Mistborn books and just finished Stormlight too,“one user wrote. Who said gaming can’t be educational?
Elsewhere, multiple fans cited Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, as wellas Ghostbusters, as another pair of forgettable collabs. On the surface, it’s pretty surprising given the popularity of both franchises, but when you dive into things, it makes a ton of sense. That’s because Wreck-It Ralph had an emote on the shop and a brief clip from the movie playing in-game. Meanwhile, Ghostbusters items appeared in Chapter 2 Season 4, which was in August 2020 during the height of the COVIVD-19 pandemic. In other words, gamers' minds were certainly occupied with other things.
Popular band Radiohead is considered another forgettable collab because of how uneventful it was. The collab simply brought a lobby track and loading screen to the game. Nothing more, nothing less. “We truly were spoiled,“one fan wrote. Say it ain’t so, but Weezerwas also mentioned as another insignificant collab.
The discussion was a fun trip down memory lane. While all of these collaborations mentioned are considered misses, it’s safe to say that overall, Fortnite has had way more hits. And even when it missed, there was at least an attempt to bridge the world of gaming and pop culture together.
