Summary
If you played Wii Sports Resort as a child, chances are you were disappointed that you couldn’t break free from the confines of each minigame and go explore the entirety of Wuhu Island, the tropical paradise in which most of the minigames are set. It was always torture as a kid to see the big city in the distance whileparticipating in archery or that fantastic sword fighting minigame, yet not being able to go see what’s up.
Thankfully, one fan called AtomicLugia appears to have shared that same dream, and has actually managed to put together a version of the game with the Unity engine called Wuhu Island Explorer, which lets players explore the island with no time limits or restrictions. Wuhu Island Explorer lets you run around the titular island to your heart’s content, and you can even swim around and dive under the ocean too.

Of course, the original Wuhu Island wasn’t meant to be explorable, and would obviously be a bit tricky to play through had the entire thing just been ripped from the game and made playable, so AtomicLugia has also made a few necessary changes. Alongside bug fixes nd other small tweaks, they’ve added underwater areas to find, as well as some of the stuff from the Wii Fit Plus version of Wuhu Island to make the entire experience a more complete package.
Wii Sports Resort’s Wuhu Island Can Now Be Explored On Foot
To explore Wuhu Island, you’ll be given the choice between eight different playable characters, two of which are default Miis while the others are Guest Miis. Other features include being able to toggle your character into swimwear via the game’s menu, and a fast-travel system that will let you travel to places that are seemingly inaccessible. AtomicLugia goes on to make sure people know that this isn’t a completely perfect replica of Wuhu Island, but that it’s “close enough” to the real thing.
If you’re sold on the entire ide, then you may findthe download link for Wuhu Island Explorer on the game’s Itch.io page. All you need to do is extract the folder from the zip file that can be found on the page and then run it as you would any other game. Just be aware you’ll need to play with a keyboard and mouse, as AtomicLugia explains there’s only limited controller support. Hey, at least it’s not a Wii Remote and Nunchuck.
