One Pieceis a juggernaut of Japanese culture, known worldwide for a manga that has been running since July 13, 2025, and an anime that is only younger by a couple of years. It continues to be one of Japan’s biggest cultural exports decades later, the Netflix live-action adaptation bringing in a new wave of international fans.
Another cultural influence from Japan is the kitsune, fox spirits capable of great mischief or great good. They feature in manga and anime with regularity, most notably as the Nine-Tailed Fox in Naruto, and there’s even a Devil Fruit in One Piece that lets whoever eats it transform into a kitsune. But who has it, and what powers does it grant them?
What Is The Kitsune Fruit?
In the world of One Piece, a Devil Fruit is a piece of foul tastingfruit that grants incredible powers to whoever eats it. Exactly what power you get is determined by which fruit you eat. Smoker, for example, ate the Smoke Fruit and can transform into smoke.
There areno shortage of powers to be found. You might become stretchy like rubber, be able to replace parts of your body with sword blades, or be able to swim through solid matter as if it were water.
Typicallya person can only have one Devil Fruit powerat a time. While it hasn’t ever been shown, it has been stated that eating a second fruit will cause whoever does so to die.
The seemingexception isMarshall D. Teach, better known as Blackbeard, who has two completely separate Devil Fruit powers. How he has managed this is one of the greatest mysteries in One Piece.
The trade-off is that you become unable to swim, exposure to water weakens you andwhen submerged your body becomes entirely unable to move and sinks. There is also a mineral, Sea Prism Stone, which has the same effect when you’re touched by it.
There arethree main categories of Devil Fruit. The first is Paramecia, which grants a straightforward superpower of some kind, like a rubber body. The second is Logia, which allows you to transform into and generate an elemental state, like smoke.
The third category is the one the Kitsune Fruit falls under, Zoan. These are typically associated with a type of an animal, like the wolf, andeating it allows you to transform into that animal. It has allows you have a hybrid state, like a werewolf.
Zoan Fruits alsoenhance the physical abilities of whoever eats them, putting them on a superhuman level.
The rarest kind of Zoan Fruit isthe Mythical Zoan, which might allow you to transform into a creature of legendlike the phoenix. The Kitsune Fruit is a Mythical Zoan Fruit, allowing whoever eats it to become a kitsune.
This also imbues the user with the abilities of the kitsune fox. One of the most notable shown so far in the manga is that it allows the user totransform themselves into a perfect copy of someone else, even down to their clothing.
Who Has The Kitsune Fruit?
The short answer is thata woman named Catarina Devon has the Kitsune Fruit, but it would be more accurate to say she has the Kitsune Fruit power. It isn’t clear whether she ate the fruit, or gained its power by some other method.
Catarina Devon is a member of the Blackbeard Pirates, an infamous pirate crew in One Piece who are hunting down people with Devil Fruit abilities and stealing them for themselves and their own nefarious ends.
The surname Catarina, along with her appearance, may be a reference to thehistorical conquistador and explorer, Catalina De Erauso.
Whether they’re doing this by killing them, then eating the fruit or some other way hasn’t been shown.When a Devil Fruit user dies, a nearby fruit morphs into that Devil Fruitso it can be consumed again. This is the most likely answer.
Ithasn’t been revealed in the manga or the anime whether Catarina Devon obtained her powers this wayor happened to chance across the Kitsune Fruit naturally, but the former would fit the Blackbeard Pirates methods.
Who Is Catarina Devon?
Catarina Devon wasone of the most nefarious female pirates of the Golden Age, the era sparked by Gol D. Roger’s words on the execution stand that he had left all his treausre in one piece at the end of the world.
Known as the Crescent Moon Hunter and for collecting the heads of beautiful women, she was eventually captured and imprisoned in Impel Down, the prison for themost dangerous criminalsin the world. She washeld on Level 6, the area for the worst of the worst.
Catarina Devon isthe only female prisoner shown in Impel Down in the manga. The anime introduces another, Olive, but she is far less impactful than Catarina and could beconsidered filler content.
The pirate Blackbeard used his position as a Warlord of the Sea to infiltrate Impel Down and navigate to Level 6, where heinstigated a battle royale among the prisonersthere. Only the survivors would be allowed to join his crew and gain freedom.
Catarina was one of those survivors, speaking to her incredible strength.She fought numerous other dangerous prisoners for her freedomand came out on top, marking her as a powerhouse even in One Piece terms.
Recruited into the Blackbeard Pirates she joined them as they crashed the Summit War at Marineford andaided in the killing of Whitebeard, considered one of the strongest pirates to ever sail the seas.
Whitebeard wasterminally ill and already badly injured in battleby the time the Blackbeard Pirates finished him off, but it’s still no small feat.
After this, during the timeskip, she and the other Blackbeard Pirates began hunting Devil Fruit users for their powers. She hadn’t been shown using her kitsune abilities before this, so it seems reasonable to believethis is when she gained them.
Catarina Devon is a trusted member of the Blackbeard Pirates, serving asone of the ten Titanic Captains. She is in charge of the sixth flagsip of the fleet and oversees her own division, a role she would be suited to given her history.
Although we don’t know for certain that Catarina Devon was a Captain during her exploits in the Golden Era,it would be rare for someone who wasn’t a Captain to become notorious enough to be kept on Level 6of Impel Down.
While her full abilities have yet to be put on display, Catarina Devon was a force to be reckoned with even without the Kitsune Fruit. With it she ismost likely capable of feats that would put her career before prison to shame.
