As with many, many other monster-taming games,Yaoling: Mythical Journeybegins your adventure by asking you to pick a starter, a first buddy with whom you’ll set off into the world and face trials and tribulations. Meep, Flenny, and Bungo are the creatures you are presented with, and they all have quite unique abilities that will determine how useful you find them.
Unlike many other games, you’ll also be handed multiple other creatures at the same time, and these don’t change depending on your choice of starter. As a result, your choice will determine only what sort of party you’ll be running for the first few hours of the game.
Yaoling: Mythical Journey is currently in Early Access, so the details below may change over the course of development.
Which Starter Should You Choose?
It’s important to first understand more about the three starters you are presented with. They mostly differ in their battle role, though their abilities are also worth noting.
Slash
Deft Strike
Deals slash and wind damage in a large area around Bungo.
Bungo is a melee attacker with a very powerful ability. They are held back by being relatively fragile.
Pierce
Fire Blossom
Deals concussive and fire damage, and very useful against slow or static enemies.
Flenny is a ranged attacker with a very high rate of fire. Unfortunately, they are rather fragile so are susceptible to Yaolings who can blink behind enemy lines.
Frost
Dark Tides
Pulls enemies into the spell’s target and then deals frost damage in the area.
Meep is a melee attacker with a very useful ability. They’re also a little bit bulkier than the alternative starters.
When taken on their own,Bungo tends to be the best starter when it comes to raw damage output, but does tend to be quite a risky pick - Bungo will rush ahead thanks to high speed and then end up getting killed due to their low defensive stats.
Our recommendation would be Meep. Meep is quite strong and has an ability that is not only powerful on its own, but can enableother Yaolings to deal a huge amount of damage with their own abilities.
In addition, whileSlash and Pierce are very common elementsfor Yaolings (especially in the early game),Frost is considerably rarerand thus can cover rarer weaknesses. It’s far easier to replace Bungo and Flenny with similar and stronger Yaolings than it is to replace Meep.
