The new expansion brings new items, enemies, bosses, equipment, and plenty of secrets to uncover, following the familiar formula of Shadow of the Erdtree forElden Ring. It’s vast, expansive, and packed with numerous locations to explore and mysteries to solve.
While the main path is straightforward if you stay attentive, there are moments where you might find yourself unsure of what to do next. Conversely, you might obtain a crucial item needed for progression, like Messmer’s Kindling, without knowing where or how to use it.
How To Get Messmer’s Kindling
From the name, you can assume thatMessmer’s Kindling is related to Messmer, a new boss fightfound in the Shadow Keepwithin the Realm of Shadow. This location is situated in thenorthern part of the map.
To reach it, you must first cross the bridge northeast andgo through Castle Ensis. Then, proceed through the castle anddefeat Rellana, the Twin Moon Knight.
After defeating Rellana,continue northuntil you reach the Shadow Keep. Upon arriving, your main goal is toadvance upwards to the top, where you will findMessmer the Impalerwaiting for you.
This boss fight can be challenging, but if you manage to defeat him, you will receive his remembrance along withMessmer’s Kindling.
Where To Use Messmer’s Kindling
If you check the item description of Messmer’s Kindling, it states that it has the power toburn the sealing tree located within the Old Rauh ruins. These ruins are situatednorthwest on the mapand can be accessed through the Shadow Keep.
Starting from theStore House on the First Floor of the Site of Grace,turn leftanddescend the elevatordirectly in front of you.Proceed through the right doorand continue forward until you reach the outside of the building.
Cross the bridge ahead to its end, then ascend the stairs and take the elevator up, which will lead you tothe Ancient Ruins of Rauh.
This is also part of the main progression in the Shadow of the Erdtree.
In this region, you want tocontinue westwarduntil youarrive at the Church of the Bud, where you willconfront Romina, the Saint of The Bud. After defeating her, exit the arena, andyou’ll find a small tree that you may interact with.
Burning the sealing tree will dispel the shadows obscuring the nearby building, granting you access andyou will be automatically teleported to this location.
It’s important to note that this will be your final destination before completing the main storyline of Shadow of the Erdtree, so keep that in mind.
