There are many challenges throughout your journey inElden Ring, especially for a lowly Tarnished. The Lands Between (and The Land Of Shadow) are no stranger to powerful forces willing to alter the world to suit their visions. But, there are some powers even beyondthat of Elden Lordsand the demi-gods you fight.
One such entity is that of The Frenzied Flame. While you can align yourself with this being, it can be difficult to get the full sense of what it is, even through its questline, so what is this thing that wants your Tarnished to change the world for it?
Some spoilers for Elden Ring’s main storyline follow.
What Is The Frenzied Flame?
It is the maddening pain and unstoppable tears of those afflicted with the flame of frenzy brought into being. - Unendurable Frenzy Description
The entity that is known asThe Frenzied Flame is actually a godin the Elden Ring lore.It belongs to the same pantheon as that of the God of Rot and The Formless Mother. There are other gods and god-like entities out there in this pantheon, but they have varying power levels and domains that set them apart.
The Frenzied Flame’s domain is that of chaos, being the purest embodiment of such.It is often symbolized by a mass of vivid yellow flames. The power to summon that type of flame is also something The Frenzied Flame bestows upon those who are devoted to it.
Those both devoted and afflicted by this god of chaos can not only be denoted by these yellow flames, but also by the yellow-orange glow to their eyes.
These enemies are usually a bit tougher and more aggressive than their counterparts, and drop more runes upon defeat.
What Is The Goal Of The Frenzied Flame?
In times past, every single person who attempted to control the flame of frenzy succumbed to madness after a desperate internal struggle. This incantation is testament to a meager victory. - Frenzied Burst Description
Put simply,The Frenzied Flame wants to usher in a world ruled by chaos. It has sensed the power dynamic shift as the Great Rune was broken, and like some of the other greater entities out there, it has taken this as its moment to act.
It seeks to do so by having certain Tarnished that it can gain power over, who may then attempt to vie for the title of Elden Lord, andin turn destroy the Erdtreewho is the main deific power currently underThe Golden Order.We see this if you decide to go along with the Three Finger’s questline, and also in how The Frenzied Flame uses Vyke and Shabriri in turn.
How Powerful Is The Frenzied Flame?

There is a vague notion of how powerful this god is from the game.It seems to be on the same level (or near so) with that of the unnamed draconic deity, and the God of Rot.
So, seeing that the dragons and their god once had sway over The Lands Between, it is possible that The Frenzied Flame would be capable of doing so as well.
The best sense you get of its power is inThe Shadow Realm, more notably the Abyssal Woods.Here the forest has been altered, with the only creatures left alive having the signature glowing eyes of The Frenzied Flame.
You can also see the raw power of the flame with the yellow veins that stretch across the ground and water.This all stems from Midra’s Manse, and Midra’s own involvement in trying to become the chosen of the flame.
The other places this power is shown are the towers across The Lands Between that have the glowing eye of The Frenzied Flame above them, simply being within eyesight of them is enough to drive anyone mad in seconds.
Who Is Devoted To The Frenzied Flame?
Vyke
…Like Vyke himself, it has been tormented by the yellow flame of frenzy from within. - Vyke’s War Spear Description.
There are few Tarnished who gained as much notoriety as Vyke. Before your own character started rising the ranks,Vyke was most likely the strongest Tarnishedout there.
During his rise to become Elden Lord,he somehow ran across the power of The Frenzied Flame(it seems either through betrayal or he sought its power).He can still be found around Frenzied Flame Village, wielding the same flames that torture him now.
This is another testament to its power, being able to take down someone nearing Elden Lord status.
Shabriri
It is said that the man, named Shabriri, had his eyes gouged out as punishment for the crime of slander, and, with time, the blight of the flame of frenzy came to dwell in the empty sockets. - Shabriri’s Woe Description.
One of the other Tarnished you meet along your journey.Shabriri inhabits the same body as Finger Hunter Yura.Once Yura died,Shabriri took host of his body for his own gain in service of The Frenzied Flame.
He isn’t the most powerful of those who follow the flame, but he may be the most devout.Upon meeting him he talks about his only goal is to usher in a world controlled by the flame, causing chaos to reign across the land.
Midra
Midra is the most powerful of those you meet who follow The Frenzied Flame. He and his wife were part of a group who sought to become chosen by the flame, in turn becoming a physical embodiment of its will in the living world.
Sometime before you meet him, most of the other lords were killed by the inquisition that sought them out, and his wife Nanaya as well.He has been kept alive by the dying wish (or curse) of his wife, telling him only to “endure.”
You enrage him by invading his Manor, dodging the nearly unkillable Untouchables and their maddening gaze.Once you defeat his mortal body, he becomes the physical embodiment of The Frenzied Flame.
