TheElden Ringlore has been expanded upon majorly with the newShadow of the ErdtreeDLC and has added layers to the story that not even the most seasoned lore experts were expecting. With so many new characters, the depth of each decision and the intentions behind specific actions and points of history are amazing to just immerse yourself into.

Such was the case with a seemingly very normal boss fight, Metyr, Mother of Fingers, an optional boss you may fight after progressing Co. It’s also really important with connections to the Golden Order, the Greater Will, and has some relation to the Elden Beast as well.

Who Is Metyr, Mother Of Fingers

To understand who Metyr is, we’ll have to start from the beginning. Before the age of the Golden Order and before Marika’s ascent to Godhood, the first ever shooting star to strike the Lands Between was Metyr, a being that came before even the Elden Beast.

Metyr was consideredthe very first envoy of the Greater Will, and it is the mother to all finger creepers and the Two Fingers.

As the Greater Will’s daughter, she is looked upon as a divinity by the people and her guidance was that of the Greater Will’s. She spread this influence through the Two Fingers.

Marika supposedly embraced the Two Fingers and the Greater Will as they would aid in her vengeance against the Hornsent and her becoming the god of the lands. Metyr’s connection to Marika is just speculation, but there’s a high chance they colluded with each other before Marika reached the gates of divinity.

Perhaps Metyr was the‘seduction’ mentioned in the story trailer and the ‘betrayal’was Marika’s revenge on the Hornsent for the persecution of her people. Metyr is already such a cosmic figure with a lot of power that not considering her connection to Marika is a misstep in figuring out the intricacies of the lore surrounding Metyr.

Metyr And The Greater Will

Upon reaching the Lands Between, it was believed that Metyr and the Two Fingers have the closest connection to the Greater Will and can thus contact the outer god for guidance towards the governance of the lands.

It’s true that Metyr received signs in the beginning, but the Greater Will has abandoned her, and as such everythingthe Two Fingers pass on to Marika and the people of the Lands Betweenis no sign from a greater god, but something that is being made up as it goes.

Well… the truth lies deeper still. It is their mother who is damaged and unhinged.

It’s a huge reveal that one of the major religions of the Lands Between is just built upon lies and deceit because of the disconnect between Metyr and the Greater Will. Count Ymir knows this but is still devoted to Metyr, becoming the mother of fingers himself after you defeat Metyr.

It’s important to note that Metyr doesn’t die in the boss fight, and upon being defeated, simply teleports away, so there might be more to uncover about Metyr’s story and some details that have yet to emerge.
