Zenless Zone Zerois not set in a giant, open world that you can roam around in while fighting enemies. Instead, you will be able to travel to several different locations or head into the Hollows to engage in combat. Right from the start, you’ll be aware of the Hollows, but what exactly are they?
Here, we are going to take a look at what this unique area in Zenless Zone Zero is, as well as some examples that you can travel to in the game. This will contain light spoilers if you are still in the early stages of the game, so proceed with caution!
What Is A Hollow?
Simply put, Hollows aredisaster zones that appear as giant spheres.Within these areas, you canfind creatures called the Ethereal,which are the main enemy type that you face while playing Zenless Zone Zero.
When you complete commissions and quests, you will most likely interact with theHollow Deep Dive System (or the H.D.D.).Here, you will see what the Hollows look like;giant, mysterious orbs that cover large portions of the city.
In anofficial HoYoverse post from 2022, we learned that Hollowsgrow exponentiallyand that New Eridu is the"last shelter for urban civilization".
Rather than just a few Hollows appearing, they seem to havedestroyed most of civilization, with New Eridu surviving as the last city.As with most societies though, the city’s administration has managed to profit off of these Hollows. This is done byextracting resources that can then be used/sold within the city.
Mutants In The Hollows
As mentioned earlier, creatures within Hollows are called Ethereals. These enemies can mutate though,leading to even stronger versions.One Ether Mutant that you encounter fairly early into the game is theDead End Butcher, which resides in the Dead End Hollow.
Who Can Enter The Hollows?
Not everyone can enter the Hollows, but as a Proxy, you can! Instead of your real, physical body entering the Hollows,you go in the form of a Bangboo.
This basically means that youguide others through Hollows,with the ‘others’ beingAgents that you may summon.The agents themselves are actual people who head into the Hollows, as they have Ether resistance.
Technically, anyone can enter the Hollows, butwith no Ether resistance, they can easily become corrupted or mutated.
What Is Hollow Zero?
Hollow Zero(also referred to as ‘Limbo’) is theorigin of all the other Hollows that appear.This Hollow first appeared in Eridu, which is whythe area is destroyed New Eridu exists.Hollow Zero nowexists around the remains of old Eridu,but efforts are being made toneutralize it.
Belle and Wise used to live in old Eridu, but after the appearance of Hollow Zero,they were evacuated and now reside on Sixth Street.
