Summary
Dawntrail isFinal Fantasy 14’s fifth expansion, bringing the Warrior of Light to The New World to assist Wuk Lamat on her quest to become the land’s next Dawnservant. With an entirely new setting, several new characters, and the start of a new chapter for the Warrior of Light, Dawntrail is just the beginning of this story.
While Wuk Lamat’s quest and Sphene’s plot are wrapped up in Dawntrail, there’s still quite a bit that goes unanswered. These may be answered in future content updates, but for now, we can only speculate. Below, we’ll take a look at several lingering questions we have after the end of Dawntrail.
Spoilers for Dawntrail’s story below!
Updated July 22, 2025: In arecent interview with FFXIV director Yoshi-P, it was confirmed that Alexandria originated from the Ninth Reflection. We previously had a question pondering the very same topic, so we’ve updated this list to exchange this lingering question with another that hopefully won’t be answered so casually!

6What Happened To Ketenramm?
The legendary Lominsan explorer, Ketenramm, becomes a brief ally to the Warrior of Light in Dawntrail’s story. Ketenramm is charged with guarding the keystone to the Golden City, but he is attacked by one of Zoraal Ja’s supporters.
Then, he returns later like nothing happened, brushing off the assault like it was nothing. So, what exactly happened? Was it actually not as bad as it looked, or is there something deeper going on here?
Also, how is he still alive? We know that he discovered Tural and joined Gulool Ja Ja’s party when Tuliyollal was founded around 80 years ago, which would make Ketenramm at least 100 years old. Rogadyn don’t live any longer than typical Hyur, which have lifespans comparable to normal humans, so how in the world is Ketenramm still so spry, especially after being slashed in the back?
While it may be cliche to say, we have to ask:is Ketenramm an Ascian, or is something else going on here? No matter how you look at it, things aren’t adding up.
5Will Living Memory Stay Like That Forever?
Perhaps one of the most impactful parts of Dawntrail’s story was when we shut down Living Memory, ending the Endless while reducing the colorful world into a barren wasteland. The current version of Living Memory is eerie and sometimes uncomfortable to be in for long periods of time.
So, will we ever be able to restore Living Memory to the way it was before we shut everything down? This could definitely be part of content updates later down the line, but it would have to be done in a way that is still respectful of the story; maintaining the impact of what had to be done in Living Memory is paramount.
4What Is Going On With The Dimensional Key?
The Dimensional Key, used by Sphene and the Alexandrians to transport Solution Nine to the Source, shares a shocking resemblance to the Warrior of Light’s Azem crystal. Both of these artifacts allow the Warrior of Light to summon allies to aid them in battle, and both have the orange spiral symbol.
So, what exactly is going on here? How are these two presumably completely different artifacts related? Is the spiral symbol a universal symbol for the Lifestream, and both of these objects just happen to use this iconography?
Also, we still have the Dimensional Key at the end of the story, so could it be used to travel to other Reflections? There’s so much we don’t know, making the mysteries around these objects all the more intriguing.
3What Is The Importance Of Sphene’s Crown?
Sphene’s design is like nothing we’ve ever seen in Final Fantasy 14. At first glance, it may look vaguely Allagan, combining intricate weaving with glowing cloth. If you look closely, you can also see several uses of the infinity symbol, like in the loops in her hair, the object on her waist, or the tassels on the back of her dress.
In one of the last cutscenes in Dawntrail, there’s a shot of Sphene’s crown on a black background that hangs for a few seconds. We learned earlier in the story that Sphene’s crown functions like a Regulator, but this isn’t exactly true, because Sphene isn’t technically alive and so she doesn’t expend souls when she “dies”, which is the function of the Regulator.
So, why is her crown shown in one of the last cutscenes? Is she going to be brought back in some way later? Will we use her crown in some other way, like restoring Living Memory?
2Was There Another Way To Power The Endless?
We are told pretty clearly in the final section of Dawntrail that the only way to stop the Endless from continuously draining souls to survive is to essentially kill them by shutting down Living Memory. But, could there have been another way? Was there another power source that could be used to fuel the Endless other than souls?
While this could be touched on in later story updates, it would slightly invalidate the impact of shutting down Living Memory, and Erenville’s farewell to his mother would have a bitter aftertaste, but in a fantasy world where almost anything is possible, fueling the Endless by means other than souls seems like a plausible suggestion.
1What Will Happen To Solution Nine?
Solution Nine is a city that runs on souls. Through the power of the Regulator, the people of Solution Nine are able to revive from untimely deaths by expending souls, which are collected from citizens who die of natural deaths, and people from outside Alexandria’s bubble.
Now that we’ve shut down the soul-cleaning facility Origenics and Living Memory, how will Solution Nine continue to function? Their society will likely be fine for a while with the souls they have stocked up, but what happens when those run out? Will Solution Nine collapse, or will Wuk Lamat and Koana find a solution for its people before it’s too late?
