Summary

If you were hoping to play Todd McFarlane’s legendary Spawn in anotherMortal Kombat, well, then we have some good news for you. As part of a new update, Spawn is back in Mortal Kombat. The bad news? Well, Spawn is only part of Mortal Kombat Mobile, meaning if you wanted to match him up against John Cena’s Peacemaker or Homelander inMK1, then you’re out of luck.

News of the update comes by way of Mortal Kombat Mobile’s official website. In it, via Update 5.4, Spawn will join the MK Mobile roster as a “Diamond” tier character. He’s officially being labeled as Tormented Soul Spawn, and several Spawn-related towers will also be part of the update. It’s an interesting update considering that Spawn was originally DLC for Mortal Kombat 11, and the recently released MK1will be wrapping up its first DLC season with Takeda before the end of the month.

Spawn Was A Legendary DLC Character

The revived Mortal Kombat series has had some insane DLC guest characters over the years. From Arnold Schwarzenegger’s iconic T-800 to the Xenomorph from Aliens, Mortal Kombat has firmly established itself as a hub for pop culture crossover in fighting games. Chief among those DLC highlights was MK 11’s Spawn DLC, which brought the character into a proper video game.In fact, MK fans rated Spawn’s fatality as one of the most brutal in all the series' history.

It remains to be seen if the presence of Spawn in MK Mobile could mean that Spawn will make his way into MK1, though it would be an interesting situation if he could. Outside of Shang Tsung, MK hasn’t had any DLC repeats, though that likely has more to do with licensing than anything. Assuming the Spawn license is still in play, then perhaps he’ll be fair game.

Though as much as Spawn back in MK is worth celebrating, it’s important to make mention that dozens of members of NeatherRealm’s mobile team have been laid off.GamesIndustry.biz reported news of the cuts earlier on Thursday, and at least 50 team members have been affected. It’s another unfortunate development in what has been a tumultuous several months in the industry for developers. Here’s wishing them all the best.
