The Gengar VMAX from Fusion Strike continues to create new peaks after some worrying valleys to claim its place as the best Gengar card.

A Gengar Unlike The Rest
In one of the tightest battles ever, the Gengar ex from FireRed & LeafGreen falls just short of two competitors, though it remains hot on their tails, with only a few dollars separating this card from the next two entries. Despite falling short, thiscartoonish portrayal of Gengar gives us a new look at this classic Pokemon,which is a success in its own right.
This card’s market price is strangely low,despite an MP sale of $350 on Jun 27, 2025.
Much like the Gengar from Fossil, the condition changes the value of this card by considerable amounts at every interval, with MP copies selling between$169 to $350,LP copies hovering around$250,and NM copies commanding in the region of$300 to $400.

Triumphant isn’t usually among the first vintage Pokemon sets you think of when it comes to Gengar, but this Ghost Pokemon’s ubiquitous presence is undeniable.
As one of the most popular Pokemon globally, and consistently among the top three in the west, Gengar stands as one of the most popular Pokemon to collect in the TCG.
This card can be bought for as little as $31.33 in damaged condition, but LP copies triple this price, ranging between $82 and $99.60. Some lucky buyers were able to purchase NM copies for roughly $90, leaving this card’s ceiling somewhere around the $100 mark.
10Gengar: Expedition (Holo Rare) – $120.85
A Gloriously Goofy Gengar
The Expedition Gengar gives us an unexpected depiction of Gengar, giving a hair-like quality to the ghostly tufts on its head. This cute pet-like portrayal of the ghostly Gengar gives it an almost cuddly appearance, especially when combined with its smirk, which comes off as slightly “spoopy,” more than scary.
Appearances aside, this Gengar is incredibly rare, as NM copies are rarely available on TCGPlayer, with no sales recorded for the first-edition Holo version of this card in recent times. However, theLP market is booming,with Gengar in this condition going for about$120.
9Gengar VMAX: Prize Pack Series Cards (Rare) – $123.47
A Competitive Exclusive
This rare Prize Pack Series Gengar VMAX towers above its twin art from Fusion Strike, as the alternate art version leads the way in that set. However, this art is gorgeous in its own right, and it finally gets to shine with an impressive price tag.
Prize Pack Series cards are distributed randomly via packs awarded to winners and participants at PLAY! Pokemon events.
While you’ll struggle to find new listings on TCGplayer, sales for NM copies of this card are on the upswing, with prices ranging from $100 to $600. While the most recent $600 sale hasn’t been replicated yet,this card’s price continues to trend upward as it becomes more difficult to find this card.
8Gengar: Skyridge (Rare) – $142.75
A Skyridge Classic
This Skyridge gemis one of the best Gengar cards based on its eye-catching artwork that delivers an unusually bright depiction of Gengar while still delivering on its traditionally creepy vibes.
Skyridge is regarded as one of the most difficult sets to find cards in NM condition, with clean copies typically commanding a hefty premium over lesser versions. HP copies of Gengar start at $65, while the LP version nearly doubles that, clocking in at $119.99. NM copies sell for almost $200, setting a sky-high standard for this stunning card.

A Bright And Bold Redesign
Gengar starts things off with a friend: Mimikyu, as these popular Ghost-type Pokemon set the tone with one ofthe most valuable duos from the Sun & Moon era. While you don’t usually picture sunshine and rainbows when it comes to these two troublemakers, the recolor offers a strangely satisfying portrayal of two pesky poltergeists.
Ghost jokes aside, this pairing has been pulling its weight, as it continues to climb from its starting point in the $90s, and has continued toskyrocket up past the $120 mark.While Rainbow Secret Rares are often maligned for their intrusive pattern, this card produces an eye-catching result.
6Gengar EX: Phantom Forces (Full Art) – $184.43
All Eyes On Gengar
Gengar EX from Phantom Forces is the best close-up of this iconic Ghost-type that the Pokemon TCG has ever seen, as we’re greeted by a pearly-white smile. The explosion of colors behind Gengar can only be rivaled by the unusual Rainbow Secret Rare combination with Mimikyu, though, this card is much more striking.
Luckily, this card came fromone of X & Y’s best sets, Phantom Forces, which isn’t as hard to find NM copies as some older vintage sets. While this card once barely reached the $100 mark, it has since begun soaring into the mid-100s to its currenthigh of around $150.
5Gengar: Fossil (Holo Rare) – $223.07
A Simple, Quintessential Gengar
The Fossil Gengar is likely the most famous depiction of Gengar in the Pokemon TCG, as this card is one of the earliest versions of Gengar to ever be released in the TCG. The simple black background sets the tone for future Gengar cards and provides the perfect canvas for Gengar’s purple form to shine.
Luckily, there is plenty of availability for first edition copies of this card when you compare it to some of the other rarest Gengar cards. MP copies can be had at around $80, but perfectionists will need to payclose to $250 for a clean copy.

A Shining Example Of Simplistic Perfection
Sabrina’s Gengar takes home another win, as it follows up an impressive showing asthe most valuable card in Gym Heroeswith an incredibly tough victory to claim the crown ofthe most expensive Gengar card ever.
This iconic depiction of Gengar givesplenty of room for swirl patterns to appear on the left sideof the card, giving ample opportunity to collect a unique copy of this incredible card.
First edition copies of this card are already extremely valuable, as evenMP copies can fetch in the neighborhood of $200.If you’re hunting for an LP copy, then prepare to open your wallet to the tune of roughly $400 or more, as certainclean NM copies have sold for about $450.
3Gengar & Mimikyu GX: Team Up (Alt Art) – $354.74
A Perfect Poltergeist Pairing
Gengar makes its presence known amongthe most expensive cards you’ll find in Sun & Moon’s Team Up set, only falling short of first place due to the existence of the ever-present Latios & Latias GX alt-art. There’s not much going on in the background, but these two Pokemon prefer to live in shadow anyway.
Althoughthis card fell flat, plummeting from $320 to about $250,it has risen from the ashes to soar back up into the 300s, reversing a massive downward trend that took it to the floor. There’s no doubt that this will remain one of the best Gengar cards ever, judging by art alone.
