Summary

If you couldn’t tell based on its name, the stars ofDungeons of Hinterbergare the dungeons. The game features 26 to explore, all ranging in difficulty from Levels one to nine and featuring a wide variety of puzzles and combat encounters.

But not all of these dungeons are created equal, so we’ve ranked our top dungeons based on which are the most satisfying and enjoyable to complete. It’s worth noting that boss dungeons are excluded since they feel like their own separate entity, and with so few sprinkled throughout, they’re all naturally highlights of each region.

Difficulty Level 3

Kolmstein definitely stands out from the other three regions in Dungeons of Hinterberg, largely due to its wintery theming, but also, the magic abilities in this region also help the dungeons have a unique feel compared to the other regions that can sometimes blend together when you’re in the depth of their dungeons.

The first dungeon you’ll likely try inKolmstein is Glacial Galaxy, and it’s a great first impression of the challenges you’ll be facing in the rest of this area. The ranged magic is snappy for quick puzzle solving, and the snowboard ability makes getting around a blast.

Difficulty Level 7

Doberkogel is an interesting area in Dungeons of Hinterberg, since you’ll likely spend a lot of the opening hours of the game there and then only return much later on to try its much harder late-game dungeons.

Shredding Facilityshows that the early game magic in Doberkogel still has some new tricks to get you thinking, with the ranged grapple ability at its best here. The puzzles here never get frustrating, and all have a satisfying conclusion to make getting through the dungeon a blast.

6Old Quarry

Another late-game highlight featured in Doberkogel is theOld Quarry. While its name might be unassuming, this level has some of the most creative design you’ll find throughout Dungeons of Hinterberg and is a lot of fun to work through.

The core mechanic in this dungeon will see you switching pathways to ensure that cargo gets to the right destination, but when combined with some fun exploration and challenging puzzles, this seemingly mundane motif gets a lot more interesting.

Dungeons of Hinterberg Three beams of light pointing at the portal to the Lighthouse Reef dungeon.

5Lighthouse Reef

Difficulty Level 6

Some of the best dungeons featured throughout Dungeons of Hinterberg are just as challenging to access as they are to complete, withLighthouse Reefbeing the best example. To access the door to this dungeon, you’ll need to kayak all around Brunnelsumpf to activate three lighthouses, all shining where the dungeon will appear.

Once you finally get to enter, you’re then faced with more lighthouse-themed puzzles, all centered around one area with increasingly difficult enemy fights. Getting to challenge each part in whichever order you want makes this one of the less linear dungeons throughout the game.

Difficulty Level 8

While the appearance of some levels in Dungeons of Hinterberg can start to mesh together, some have a much more striking visual identity that helps make them more memorable. One of the best examples isBizarre Towers, one of the final levels in Hinterwald.

Clearly inspired by the abstract artwork of Escher, this puzzle-filled level sees Luisa twisting gravity on various buildings to reach her destination. The dungeon requires you to think outside of the normal level constraints, and the forced camera angle works to the level’s benefit.

3Jelly Tunnels

Difficulty Level 1

A lot of the earlier levels throughout Dungeons of Hinterberg are enjoyable upon initial completion but then fail to stack up to the more complex dungeons later on in the game. However, an early-game highlight in Doberkogel is theJelly Tunnels.

This level has a clear concept with the switching jelly platforms and uses this idea to its maximum potential to make an admittedly simple but incredibly engaging platforming dungeon. This dungeon is also well-paced, something that can’t be said for some of the later-game dungeons that tend to outstay their welcome.

2Mushroom Isles

Difficulty Level 5

Your reward for befriending the town dog in Dungeons of Hinterberg is access tothe Mushroom Isles, and it’s a worthwhile reward, being one of the best dungeons in Hinterwald. Similarly to Lighthouse Reef, this dungeon has a central area and three challenges that you may take on in any order to reach the end.

Each of the main areas in Mushroom Isles features a simple but satisfying puzzle to complete to help purify the water at the center of the level, and once it’s completely clean, you can get to the end without being poisoned. The visual design complements this level perfectly, making it a surreal journey to complete.

Difficulty Level 4

It’s hard to deny just how fun the snowboard magic ability in Kolmstein is to use. The developers clearly knew that they had something great with it and designedSnowflake Slalomto perfectly display what the ability can do.

This is definitely one of the longer dungeons, but it isn’t tiring to complete. It is full of snowboarding challenges, with some occasional breaks for combat to help break it up. While the snowboarding is never too tricky, this is where you will be challenged the most to be as speedy and accurate as possible.
