The Casting of Frank Stonewas billed as aDead by Daylightspin-off from developer Supermassive in the vein ofThe QuarryandUntil Dawn. There are a lot of references to DbD —it even features the game’s generators— but it has much closer ties to Behaviour Interactive’s world than we first thought.

Major narrative spoilers follow.

Firstly, it’s revealed early on that Augustine is using the Entity’s powers at the Cedar Hill Mill to resurrect Frank Stone as an undying monster, transforming him from serial killer to slasher legend. But much later on in the game, we discover that the ties to the Entity run much deeper.

Everything Augustine does is in service to the Entity, allowing it to consume our world entirely. It’s ableakfinale, as Augustine describes that the Entity will “play with our souls for all eternity”, leaving our cast trapped in unending torment. Death, as we discover, would have been a mercy.

From the very start, The Casting of Frank Stone was unravelling the origins of the Entity’s realm in Dead by Daylight, revealing that every single game we’ve played is a horrific round of torture against the survivors.

Depending on who made it to the end in your playthrough, you’ll have a different interaction when you finally reach the iconic campfire we see our characters sitting by before every single Dead by Daylight match. Linda will be despot, Madi terrified and wanting to go home, and Sam resolute.

An endless hunt of fear and hope, pain and sacrifice from which even death is no escape. And now, let the trial begin.

Frank Stone appears then to be the very first Dead by Daylight killer, as far as the narrative is concerned. He is “The Champion”, the one who helped usher in the Entity’s realm. Even Augustine who plottedforthis Lovecraftian horror succumbs in end to its whims. Like I said, it’s a bleak story.
