Summary
Five Nights at Freddy’shas a surprisingly intricate storyline which has only expanded with each additional entry to the series. What originally began as the story of a security guard working a minimum wage job for the duration of a week, quickly expanded to include supernatural forces, technological terrors, and murder.
So seeing the entire storyline as a whole, which parts of it changed the audience’s perspective of things the most? Which reveals had players shocked or had the most impact on the storyline moving forward? These are the ten biggest plot twists in the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise.

10Screaming Children
The First Mystery
The original Five Nights at Freddy’s may seem like a simple premise but even from the start it had plenty of secrets for the player to discover. One ofthe biggest plot twistscame with the identity of the animatronics.
By slowing down the animatronic screams and even hearing the extended audio, it revealed the sounds of the missing children hinted in subtle ways. The animatronics are not just malfunctioning machines, they truly are possessed and this reveal kicks off the mysteries surrounding Freddy’s.

9Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 Is A Prequel
Not Where But When
With the success of Five Nights at Freddy’s a second game gave players hope that they would be able to see what happens next in the story. At first, the game appears to be a sequel with the old animatronics being refurbished and enhanced with new technology.
However, as the nights continue, it is revealed that Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is not a sequel, but a prequel. It goes deeper into the history of Freddy Fazbears, where the original murders took place at the hands of Afton.

8The Marinette’s Role
How The Children Became Animatronics
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 also dropped another twist to the origins of the possessed animatronics. Different “Save Them” minigames show the puppet known as the Marionette, attempting to save a little girl named Charlotte Emily.
Failing to save her, the Puppet is possessed by Charlotte and gains a new personality. Now with supernatural abilities, the secret cutscenes go on to show more murder victims as the Puppet attaches their souls to the animatronics. This finally confirmed how the animatronics came to be possessed.

7Afton’s Quest For Immortality
The Presence Of Remnant
So what begins as somewhat ofan analog horror game, soon begins to have themes of supernatural powers and even immortality. This was the goal of Afton Robotics, a company started by the former head of Freddy’s Pizzeria during Sister Location.
There is a supernatural power known as Remnant. When a child dies, they release this power which can latch on to inanimate objects, bonding the soul. This reveals that Afton’s murders are not without purpose and hint at a greater scheme in the background.

6The Purple Guy’s Identity
The Mysterious Purple Man
Purple Guy first appeared in Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 during the arcade minigames between nights. It was long debated as to his identity after the minigames showed him appearing mysteriously to kill the children.
While Purple Guy’s role in the story was made clear, no one knew the true identity of the man. At least until the non-canon “Silver Ones” novel and the reveal of his real name in Sister Location: William Afton. One of the earliest theories was that Purple Guy was Phone Guy due to his hand looking like a phone in some scenes.

5William Afton Becomes Springtrap
A Villain’s End Or Beginning?
William Afton becoming Springtrap is one of the most iconic moments in the franchise. During the third game, Freddy Fazbears Pizzeria is converted intoa haunted houseattraction meant to capitalize on the murders that occurred there.
Eventually, they discover an animatronic known as Springtrap, which is later revealed to be possessed by William Afton. Having destroyed the original animatronics, he is confronted by the spirits of his victims, which trapped him inside the Springlock Bonnie suit.

4The Bite Of 83
Not The Bite Of 87
William Afton has children of his own and during Five Nights At Freddy’s 4, players get a glimpse at an event that until then was only hinted at, or at least that’s what fans thought. Mike, older brother to Evan, constantly teases his sibling for his fear of the animatronics.
During a birthday party at the facility, Mike carries Evan toward the Springlock Freddy. He puts his head inside Freddy’s mouth and unfortunately, the moisture of Evan’s tears, causes the springlocks to fail and administer a deadly bite revealing that the entire game, took place inside the child’s mind post-bite.

3The Truth Behind Pizzeria Simulator
Secretly Five Night’s At Freddy’s Six
At first glance, Pizzeria Simulator appears to be a fun spin-off title from the mainline series. However, as you salvage different animatronics from the mainline series, it becomes apparent that the game is more than just a side excursion.
In reality, Pizzeria Simulator is an elaborate trap meant to lure in all the remaining animatronics into the building, including Circus Baby, Springtrap, the Puppet, and more. This culminates in a fire meant to wipe out Springtrap and free the remaining souls of the children.

2Help Wanted
Scott Cawthon Is Fake
Just when players thought the end of the storyline was at hand, they were sorely mistaken. Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted introduced a new take on themascot horror seriessending the series into VR. The player beta tests a new game made by Fazzbear Entertainment, a successor to the original company.
In the simulation, the company reveals that the original Five Nights At Freddy’s games were all developed by a rogue developer named Scott Cawthon. They also claim that games vastly misinterpret the actual events that happened.

1The Return Of William Afton
Afton’s Successor
William Afton always comes back. Even after being killed in the spring lock suit and burned to a crisp twice, William Afton survived through technology and the supernatural. Existing inside an electronic board, Afton is able to manipulate the virtual events of Help Wanted and corrupt one of the newer characters known as Vanessa.
Vanessa soon becomes a conduit for even more murders throughout the newly formed Freddy Fazzbear’s Pizzaplex donning a secondary identity as Vanny. It looks like the storyline is far from over and only just beginning.
