Part of the reason why combat inBlack Myth: Wukongis so enjoyable is thanks to the wide variety of options The Destined One has in combat.Whether it’s spells, stances, spirits, or vessels, there are plenty of ways you can switch up your play style.
While it is equipped like the other spells, transformations are very much in their own category. Using the Might meter, these skills let you take a break from being a monkey and instead take the form of a different warrior you’ve encountered throughout the game. But which transformation is the most fun to use?
7Ashen Slumber
Chapter 3: Optional
Unlike the spells you’ll unlock throughout Black Myth: Wukong that are mostly obtained through the main quest line, a lot of the transformations can be completely missed if you don’t know where to look, and the location for some of them can be downright obscure.
A prime example of this isAshen Slumber, the ability that allows you to transform into the fire-breathing Third Prince. Depending on when you try and find this transformation, the boss fightmight have already been completed, and all you’ll need to do is raid his corpse, but even getting to that point requires a lot of seemingly random backtracking before you get the new form.
6Ebon Flow
After running into Chen Loong in Chapter 3’s Bitter Lake, you’ll be able to help the dragon and finally enter theRuyi ScrollRealm. This area will house a lot of previously scattered helpful NPCs in one convenient location, but it’s also the home to a new character, Yin Tiger.
As well as allowing you to upgrade your armor, you’re able to also challenge this tiger to a fight to unlock his transformation. He’s a tough optional boss to take down, especially considering his small boss arena, but once you get to control his heaving sword for yourself, it’s all worth it.
5Golden Lining
Chapter 4: Optional
Another very easy-to-miss transformation isGolden Lining, which allows you to turn into one of the harder optional boss characters: Yellow Loong. Just to find this boss, you’ll have to put plenty of effort into destroying a mural, locating three other optional bosses, and then finally getting to take on Yellow Loong himself.
After you’re finally able to beat this lightning-charged-ultra-aggressive boss, you’ll get plenty of unlocks alongside his transformation. It’s incredibly empowering to be able to use his shocking abilities for yourself, but they’ll take a little while to completely master.
4Hoarfrost
While some transformations let you turn into completely unique characters that you have to take down to get the ability, some let you turn into a more common type of enemy that you might run into a couple more times throughout the game instead.
That’s why when you run into the Monk from the Sea while randomly exploring the Thunderclap Temple, the last thing you’d expect is a new transformation after beating the tough mini-boss.Hoarfrostturns out to be one of the more entertaining options for transformation, with his snowball lobbing being easy to control and fun to pull off.
3Red Tides
Chapter 1: Optional
The very first transformation you unlock all the way in theearly hours of Chapter 1isRed Tidesafter you beat Gunagzhi. It’s an apt reward for beating one of the harder bosses of this chapter, but it also might trick you into thinking that transformations are a lot more common, when if you’re not paying attention, you might not get another one until the end of Chapter 3.
Either way, Red Tides is a perfect transformation to learn at the beginning of the game. With the combination of short, quick, firey attacks, combined with the simple charge attack, using Guangzhi is an easy option and one you’ll likely want to keep even when you unlock other choices.
2Umbral Abyss
Chapter 3: Unmissable
There are plenty of random moments throughout Black Myth: Wukong where you’ll unlock a new skill, but perhaps the most out-of-nowhere example of this is during the final boss fight against Yellowbrow at the end of Chapter 3 when all of a sudden, you’re forced into a Macaque Chief transformation.
After the fight, you’ll have the option to use this transformation formally, calledUmbral Abyss, and it’s a lot more fun to use when you know the intricacies of controlling Macaque Chief. His frost-infused attacks are quick and deadly, and he can even heal himself, making him one of the sturdier transformation options.
1Azure Dust
Chapter 2: Optional
Likely the easiest optional transformation you can unlock isAzure Dustduring Chapter 2, but that doesn’t mean that he isn’t hard to miss if you don’t know where you’re looking. After completing a simple fetch quest for the Man-in-Stone, you’ll have an easy boss fight against him and be rewarded with a transformation.
The rocky creature you turn into is slow to control, but their simple bashing attacks and immunity to bane effects makes them a surprisingly viable option in multiple encounters. It also helps that they charge up attacks by taking hits, so you don’t even need to worry about dodging.
