Summary

Final Fantasyis pretty much a household name whether you grew up with the franchise or heard about it in passing. With legendary characters such as Cloud or Lightning giving each generation a new hero to enjoy, each game is memorable in its own way. However, there are some Final Fantasy games that slip through the cracks and become forgotten.

Some of these games simply weren’t challenging enough, while others are overshadowed by other games in their series. In some cases, some games never left Japan at all and are now delisted. Here are ten forgotten Final Fantasy games you might have never heard of.

10The World Of Final Fantasy

A Monster Catching Game

The World of Final Fantasy is known for its chibi-style characters. Beneath the surface, though, it isa monster-collecting gamefeaturing characters and creatures from the entire Final Fantasy franchise as well as some new ones exclusive to the game.

While the game does appeal to a niche demographic, it doesn’t necessarily hit those same highs as the mainline series. Regardless, it is still worth checking out if you love the characters and don’t mind that it has a different gameplay style than what you may be used to.

Too Much Customization

If there’s one game with plenty of customization but still not enough substance, it’s Final Fantasy Explorers. The game gives you so many options to really make the experience unique, which includes customizing your character, the weapons they use, and even monsters that fight alongside you.

Unfortunately, the story isn’t as deep as other Final Fantasy games, so even with co-op, it doesn’t leave a lasting impression. Seeing as it often tried to push beyond the limits of the hardware, Final Fantasy: Explorers deserves a second chance to try what it wanted to do.

A Delisted Puzzle Game

Pictlogica was originally a mobile exclusive before it got ported to the Nintendo 3DS. If you’ve never heard of it, it’s becausethe game never made it out of Japan; a Puzzle RPG, Pictlogica featured many characters from the Final Fantasy franchise.

Rather than attacking directly like a normal RPG, Pictologica challenged players to solve a puzzle on the main screen. The quicker you are at solving this puzzle, the easier it becomes to fight the enemies that appear.

7Final Fantasy Mystic Quest

An RPG Tutorial For Babies

What if, instead of a booklet explaining how to play an RPG, you got a whole game as a tutorial? This is the premise of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, which many refer to as “baby’s first RPG”; the sole purpose of the game is to teach Westerners how to play RPGs.

The game is surprisingly linear for an RPG with your partner doing most of the work for you. The story is also presented in a way even a toddler could understand, with long blocks of text to spell it out for you.

6Final Fantasy Type-0 HD

Overshadowed And Forgotten

Final Fantasy Type-0 may have gotten a remake, but it still gets left behind for a variety of reasons. While the game isn’t necessarily bad, it was only released first in Japan before finally getting an HD remake worldwide.

The game features multiple playable characters that can be swapped in and out as you battle war mechs and attend classes, making it more akin to something like Persona. Unfortunately, the release coincided with the hype for Final Fantasy XV, which overshadowed its long-awaited international release.

5Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings

The Sequel You Didn’t Know Existed

Did you know that Final Fantasy XII has a sequel? If you haven’t, then it is because Revenant Wings is only on the Nintendo DS. To make matters more confusing, the original game at the time of release, was exclusive to the PS2.

So, unless you have both systems, it can get hard to follow or get hyped for the title. The game features real-time strategy elements similar to Final Fantasy Tactics but instead uses the stylus to allow the player to input their commands.

The Forgotten Spinoff

Final Fantasy VII is often spoken of as the greatest Final Fantasy game of all time. However, one of its spinoffs might just be the most forgettable; this is Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, and unlike its mainline counterpart, Dirge of Cerberus is a shooter.

With an over-the-shoulder perspective, the game isn’t quick enough to be the fast-paced shooter that it wants to be. This and the fact that it never got rereleased made the perfect ingredients for a forgotten entry in the series.

3Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes Of Time

A DS Port On The Wii

The Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles series of games may not have had the same level of popularity as the mainline games, but they had enough of a cult following to warrant their survival. Echoes Of Time, on the other hand, might be the series’s low point.

The game was originally released on DS and the Wii port shows as it includes both the touch screen and top screen interface. The game is also more enjoyable with friends, leaving the AI-controlled characters with much to be desired.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT - Sephiroth looking at the camera

2Dissidia Final Fantasy NT

Popularity Got Halted

The original Dissidia Final Fantasy on the PSP brought together some of the most iconic characters in the franchise to duke it out. On top of that, it also had a great story to tie it all together; Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, on the other hand, found a way to send the franchise into obscurity.

While the game is free to play, unlocking the characters is a bit of a grind and the gameplay can feel a bit cluttered with three vs three battles.

Enemies and Characyers from Final Fantasy All The Bravest

1Final Fantasy All The Bravest

Forgotten Mobile Game

One of the most forgotten Final Fantasy titles was forgotten by choice. Final Fantasy All The Bravest was a mobile game that has players collecting characters through in-app purchases and tackling familiar enemies and bosses.

Each character revives three minutes after death, but each character needs to be brought back one at a time, and there is also no real story to make the experience memorable. Some of the most iconic characters, such as Tifa, were locked behind a paywall, which was a requirement if you wanted to keep playing.
