Icecrown Citadel
Icecrown
Death Knights are unique among the character classes as they had a story line from their incorporation. Death Knight characters were fallen heroes of the Light who were twisted by the Lich King’s dark magics and forced to serve in his hellish crusade. They managed to break free from their enslavement and joined the Alliance and Horde in bringing down the Scourge. This storyline makes the Scourgelord’s Plate so wonderful.
While it wasn’t the first class set for Death Knights, it was the set earned through the defeat of their worst enemy. Death Knights who earned this set truly completed their story arc and managed to finally destroy the hated Lich King. This set embodies the iron strength of the Death Knights and serves as a reminder of their ultimate victory against their oppressor.

The Bastion of Twilight
Twilight Highlands
Cataclysm was the first expansion where the Death Knights were truly free from Arthas’s influence. This was a crucial point for the fledgling Ebon Blade. What would they do? What was their place in the new world? Clearly their first priority was making a fashion statement, and the Magma Plated Battlearmor makes a statement and a half.
This icy set makes an ice-cold impression. The chestplate and belt together resemble the gaping jaw of a skull, and the frozen formations on top of the headpiece form a frosty crown. This set is cooler than cool. And what’s cooler than being cool? Ice cold. Alright, alright, alright, alright.

Throne of Thunder
Isle of Thunder
WithPandaria Remix underway, plenty of players have been rediscovering the glory of Pandarian transmogs. There’s one set that stands above all in terms of Death Knight sets, and this is Throne of Thunder’s Battleplate of the All-Consuming Maw. This set is justfun. It’s wonderfully edgy in all its spiky glory. Bone structures jut out of every available surface, and the colors it comes in are all appropriately gross-looking. But that isn’t what elevates this set. Oh no.
What elevates this set is the shoulder pads. Every so often, the shoulder pads will come to life. Their gross tongues will waggle, and their jaws will snap, like some sort of deranged mimic from Dungeons and Dragons. It’s macabre and absolutely delightful. If there’s some extra bronze lying around to spare on this set, it’s well worth the purchase. Players will get a wonderful set and two new friends!

Maldraxxus
Shadowlands may not have been the most popular, but during its run, Death Knights were eating good. Not only were they front and center in the story, but their class aesthetic fit perfectly with the death-themed transmogs introduced during this expansion. One of the best options for a Death Knight was the Abomination of Maldraxxus set introduced in, where else, Maldraxxus.
This set is available in a handful of recolors, all made available through the Necrolord Campaign. Maldraxxus’s skeleton war-aesthetic was tailor-made for the Death Knights. Special features to note in this set are the ribcage pattern on the chestpiece and the spinal cord waist piece. Come on. How much more Death Knight can this get? Maldraxxus is the home of Necromancy, and there’s no place like home for a Death Knight looking for the perfect fit.

Sanctum of Domination
The Maw
Another Shadowlands classic is the Soulforged Dreadplate set. Now, players can debate about Shadowlands all day, especially about the"merits"of the Jailer. But one thing cannot be denied: the Jailer makes a mean Death Knight set. This set is perfect for those who want to feel the inhuman fantasy of being a Death Knight.
Death Knights are cursed with a hunger for causing pain and destruction, and this set is just the thing for when players want to rip and tear until it is done. The Soulforged Dreadplate is so over-the-top that it becomes chic. This set may be from a past expansion, but it’s an excellent addition to any wardrobe. Hey, vintage is cool, right?

Amirdrassil, the Dream’s Hope
Amirdrassil
Sometimes Death Knights might want a little pop of color. It can’t all be doom and gloom and shades of black. Even Death Knights might want to mix it up a little. And the set that’s perfect for mixing it up a little is the Risen Nightmare’s Gravemantle fresh out of Dragonflight. This set has the classic motifs of a Death Knight transmog (hellooooo, skulls) but it breaks up the color palette monotony with its bold use of colors.
The best-looking version is the LFR set, which comes in a bright ruby red, but other colors are featured on the other sets. The dangling ribbons from the shoulder pads look appropriately spooky (especially in that LFR red), and the head covering is a fun twist on the usual skull-mask. Check out this set before Dragonflight flies off, and the War Within arrives. Players won’t regret it.

Obtained through Honor Points
This set is an old PVP set and thus is a bit of a pain to farm. But if a player is interested, it really is worth the time. The Ruthless Gladiator’s Dreadplate Armor is obtainable through Marks of Honor, which can be obtained from things like quests and PVP activities. Those who do farm the currency needed to purchase this set are awarded with an all-time classic Death Knight transmog.
Its primary purple color is an excellent change from the usual color palettes of Death Knight sets. The headpiece is especially notable, as it is so dramatic it is almost tasteless. Almost. Combine this with the jaw-dropping skull shoulder pads, and players will have a set they could walk the runway at Fashion Week with—and raise some ghouls while they’re at it.

Hellfire Citadel
Tanaan Jungle
This is the equivalent of a ‘light spring look’ for Death Knights. This set from Hellfire Citadel isn’t as heavy-looking as other sets, and it might be an excellent choice for those who want to see their character’s face while running around. There’s no face mask, which allows for facial customizations to be seen. The color palette is black and green, a staple for Death Knight transmogs, but the colors are more muted than usual.
This makes the set less harsh. There are also ‘fewer’ spikes and skulls on this transmog than other Death Knight sets. (There’s still some. We’re Death Knights, by the Light!) If players are looking for something to mix up their usual rotation of bones, bones, and more bones, this may be the perfect set for them.

Tomb of Sargeras
Broken Shore
This set is perfect for anyone interested in giving the Unholy Death Knight spec a try. The majority of the armor is rendered in earth tones, giving off a feeling of rust. The set is accented with neon colors which ooze from various parts of the armor.
A special feature to note is the shoulder pads, which have slime dripping from the jaws of two skulls. The Gravewarden Armaments set looks like both it and its wearer were just raised from their grave to destroy- and it rules.

Death Knight Starting Zone
Archerus: The Ebon Hold
This one may be cheating, but come on! It’s like Darius Mograine says: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. (He says that, trust us). This set is the starting apparel all non-Allied Race Death Knights get on creation, and it is a popular choice for even max-level Death Knights. It’s a very simple outfit, but the whole is made great by the sum of its parts.
The dark hood lends an almost Sith-like mystery, and the tattered fabric used in the arm pieces really invokes the dead and decayed nature of Death Knights. This outfit is the Little Black Dress of Archeus. It’s a classic, and a classic never goes out of style.
