Summary

Microsoft’s Xbox Series line of consoles are getting a refresh this holiday season in the form of three new SKUs. First off, there will be a “Robot White” Xbox Series S 1TB console, as well as the long-rumored digital-only Xbox Series X. Beyond that, the Xbox Series X will be getting a new limited-edition 2TB console dubbed the “Galaxy Black” edition.

The problem? It’ll run gamers a cool $599.99. Naturally,Xboxfans aren’t having it when it comes to the next console.

We’ll Pass For Now, Microsoft

Taking to Reddit, a couple hundred fans shared their thoughts on the upcoming console refresh. “Considering I paid 500€ for the base console back in 2020, an additional 150€ for one more TB of space and a new paintjob is …. not cheap,“one gamer wrote.

Indeed, the Xbox Series X retails at $499 for 1TB of storage, meaning the extra $100 is simply for another TB of storage and a fresh coat of paint. This new galaxy black variant also has no reported hardware upgrades, meaning it’s essentially a sparkly version of a Series X.

“I don’t have a Series X. Releasing a new Series X 4 years after launch for $600 doesn’t make me want to get one,“another user wrote, pointing out the lack of price cuts on existing hardware.

What’s more is that Microsoft’s flagship consolehas the ability to expand its storage via proprietary SSD cards, of which those cards have constantly gone on sale. In other words, you’re able to already modify your console for the same price, if not cheaper.

Another eagle-eyed fan pointed to existing rumors of a PS5 Pro, writing, “If Sony does release a PS5 Pro I expect it to be around $600. Microsoft releasing a 2TB Xbox Series X for the same price just seems dumb.” It’s unclear what a PS5 Pro would actually cost, but it’s safe to assume that $600 is probably the baseline.

The harsh reality is that gamers are being pulled in a hundred different directions, as is, both in the gaming sphere and in real-life. Marketing a new console that doesn’t have any true upgrades isn’t going to go well. Only time will tell what the metrics on this release will be.
