A set of screenshots have been causing a stir in the Subnautica community recently, depicting content that can’t be found in the base game. These screenshots are being found in Time Capsules, little devices that players can leave behind with messages and images for other players to discover. Most of the time, they’re left by players, but you’ll occasionally find a Time Capsule with a message and image from developer Unknown Worlds.
That makes determining whether a Time Capsule with new screenshots is from a developer or a cheeky modder very difficult, but the messages being signed #PEEPERSRULES implies they’re from the same person. Upon the discovery of these screenshots, fans immediately took to official forums, Discord, and Reddit to get some answers, and while Unknown Worlds as a whole has remained silent for the time being, one developer is being suspiciously shifty.
Subnautica 2 Screenshots Have Been Snuck Into The First Game’s Time Capsules
We have two sneaky little messages that are pretty much acting as official confirmation that these screenshots, both of which are from developer Scott MacDonald, also known as Obraxis. First up, MacDonald responded toa fan sharing a screenshot on the game’s Steam community page, that being the sideways eyes emoji, which is almost definitely a hint that Unknown Worlds is up to something suspicious.
That gets even more clear with a second message on the official Subnautica Discord server, as after a fan shares yet another screenshot of what they think is Subnautica 2, MacDonald responds with “Huh. Funny that.” That’s as close to confirmation as you can get without Unknown Worlds outright announcing it. Only four screenshots have been found right now, but considering the ocean is a pretty big place, there could be more still out there to discover.
