Summary
If you’re excited that Terry Bogard and Mai from Fatal Fury will be making their way into the Street Fighter world via Street Fighter 6’s Year 2 pass, then we have some good news for you.Capcomhas hopes that in the future more guest characters could make their way intoStreet Fighter 6and beyond.
In an interview with IGN at Evo 2024, Shuhei Matsumoto, who is serving as a producer for the upcomingMarvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classicsandwho also served as a producer for Street Fighter 6, detailed some of the background on Year 2’s guest fighters and the future for collaborations.
According to Matsumoto, Capcom was excited about the positivity from the community by the announcement. That said, it was a difficult feat to accomplish due to the unique style that Street Fighter has. But if the engagement post launch is high, then it might not spell the end for guests.
Terry And Mai Just Might Be The Start Of Things To Come
For starters, while Street Fighter 6 is entering its Year 2 of DLC updates, it’s still relatively early in the game’s lifecycle, according to Matsumoto. Currently, Terry is slated for an Autumn 2024 release and Mai is set for a Winter 2025 release, which means December through March. The final character, Elena, is due out in the Spring of 2025, and Street Fighter 6 will presumably enter Year 3 shortly after.
So could that be when there are more guest characters? Well, it’s complicated. “Based on that reaction and based on how people are engaging with these characters, we would like to consider other options maybe in the future,” Matsumoto revealed. “This was quite a big challenge for us to even incorporate these guest characters.”
He went on to say: “Hopefully, things move forward in a positive way and there’s more opportunities that open up for us.”
Street Fighter has historically been a game with returning characters and wholly original characters, with DLC fighters typically being characters from previous games. The aspect of guests is an entirely new thing, compared to, say,Mortal Kombat, which has consistently had guest characters from pop culture.
That said, it seems like if there is a fit and the fan reception is good, then Capcom will consider it. The key being fit, as Matsumoto detailed, is to incorporate the characters in a way that makes sense for Street Fighter. Still, that revelation opens up a wealth of major possibilities.
