Summary
Splatoon 3’sWorld Championship took place between April 13 to April 14 earlier this year, which waspostponed due to the cancelation of Nintendo Live, bringing together six teams from across the globe to duke it out for the title. It was, unsurprisingly, a pretty competitive event, which ultimately ended in US side Jackpot beating Japanese side Phantom Thief of Heart in the final, crowning Jackpot as this year’s world champions.
Fast-forward a little over three months, and Jackpot now finds itself vilified among the Splatoon community, as the team has now had their win revoked by Nintendo following the discovery of several extremely racist comments made by multiple members. Jackpot’s comments surfaced on social media back in June, just two months after the team’s win, andwere collected by Twitter user Adaptability.
Most of their comments were racist towards Black and Asian players, some of which appear to have leaked from the team’s personal Discord, and the fury surrounding this controversy has been so loud that it looks to have now caught the attention of Nintendo itself. Announced viaan official statement on the Nintendo Versus Twitter account, it’s been explained that Jackpot’s recent win has now been revoked for violating Community Guidelines.
Splatoon 3 World Championships Win Revoked By Nintendo Over Racist Comments
In the statement, Nintendo explains that Jackpot has “acted in a manner that is not in line with our Community Guidelines while playing the Splatoon 3 game” and that the team’s win is now “considered vacant.” Nintendo is also going to alter the Splashtag banner that was added to Splatoon 3 to commemorate Jackpot’s win in a future software update.
At the time of writing, we have no confirmation about whether Jackpot has been banned from participating in future events, though having a World Championship win revoked is a big deal. It would be difficult to see Nintendo allowing the team to compete in an official tournament again, even if just from a PR standpoint, and this whole fiasco will have already caused major headaches at the company. If we hear more about the situation, we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
