Summary

It might still be a few months away, but excitement forSonic x Shadow Generationsis at an all-time high. That’s understandable, since the original game is considered one of the best in the series, and throwing fan-favorite character Shadow the Hedgehog into the mix was always going to get Sonic fans pumped. Sega and Sonic Team have been releasing tiny morsels of info on the game since its announcement, and now excitement is threatening to build even more due to a mysterious tease.

First spotted bythe Twitter account Tails' Channel, it appears as though Sega could possibly be teasing a fourth playable character in Sonic x Shadow Generations. Head on over to the Japanese page for the title on the official Sega website (link here), and you’ll see that a mysterious gray box is next to a portrait of Shadow, with the words “Coming Soon” underneath it.

Shadow and Sonic in Sonic X Shadow Generations

Switch to the Sonic version of the website with the blue box, and you’ll see that both Sonic the Hedgehog and Classic Sonic are displayed in a very similar way, sparking all kinds of theories among fans. It’s not exactly clear from the website as to what this grayed out box is for, but many feel that it’s clearly a tease from Sega about a potential fourth playable character.

Sonic X Shadow Generations Might Be Teasing Classic Shadow

One of the more popular theories is that this is a tease for Classic Shadow, something that fans have requested for quite some time. Sonic Superstars even poked fun at the requests byreleasing a Shadow outfit for Sonic, so Sega clearly knows there’s a desire for a classic version of the character. However, as some have pointed out, there aren’t any classic stages for Shadow in the game as far as we know, so chances are it’ll be another modern character.

Silver the Hedgehog, Metal Sonic, and Blaze are very popular theories, the latter of which recently had fans calling for her own game, while the party poopers out there think that this might just be a placeholder for a non-playable story character. It’s all a little up in the air, and the text on the website doesn’t help much in figuring out whether this mysterious character will be playable or not.

My theory is that this is a placeholder for Classic Shadow DLC. We’ve seen in recent years that Sega is very keen to prolong the lives of its games with additional content, withrecent examples being Persona 3 Reloadand Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth. Sonic Frontiers also had a pretty robust amount of post-launch content, including new playable characters, but that’s just speculation on my part.
