Summary

When it comes toSonic the Hedgehog, the series has dived into pretty much every genre out there, including racing, sports, party games, puzzle games, visual novels, and even an RPG. If you’re a big Sonic fan, you’ll probably be aware of BioWare’s less than stellar RPG called Sonic Chronicles, which released back in 2008 for the Nintendo DS and attempted to give fans of the blue blur a traditional RPG adventure to get stuck into.

BioWare even wanted Sonic Chronicles to become its own series, anda sequel would have had Sonic and the gang taking down gods, in true JRPG fashion.

Unsurprisingly, it was pretty dire, but that hasn’t stopped Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka from wanting to take a crack at a Sonic the Hedgehog RPG himself at some point in his career. In an interview with YouTube channel Good Vibes Gaming, it was brought up that Sega has some of the best RPG developers in the world in Atlus and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, and Iizuka was asked whether we might ever see a Sonic RPG for PC and consoles in the future.

Iizuka begins by explaining that he personally loves RPGs, and has actually questioned himself as to “why haven’t we done a Sonic RPG in all of this time,” referencing his own 30-year-long career. He then goes on to explain that he’d like to hopefully make a Sonic ROG at some point is career, going so far as to call it a “dream” of his.

“…I’d like to hopefully work on a Sonic RPG at some point before I retire from Sega, but you know, that’s just a dream right now. There are no concrete plans at this point.”

Just the fact that Iizuka actually wants to make a Sonic RPG is enough to instill some hope that more experimental Sonic games might be possible in the future. Sega has shown that it’s not against trying new things with Sonic in spinoff titles, so you never know what the series could have in store if Iizuka gets his way.

In any case, Iizuka probably has more pressing concerns at the moment, including the release ofSonic x Shadow Generations. We don’t have that long to waitfor the title’s full release this October, and it’s very possiblewe may see a fourth playable character revealed before then. A recent update to the Japanese website for Sonic x Shadow Generations added a mysterious “Coming Soon” box next to Shadow’s portrait, hinting at possible DLC or a new character.
