Summary

Sid Meier’s Civilization 7is another entry into the worrying trend of collector’s editions that don’t include the game. Let me quickly dye my hair grey and put on a gravelly voice to say, ‘Back in my day, buying a game got you the game!’

The collector’s editionincludes a couple of challenge coins, a patch set, some postcards, a giant ornate Civ-themed clock, a scout figure, and an art print, but if you want the game itself (arguably the most important bit), you need to fork out an extra $120.89.

If you buy the version with the game, you’ll get aSteamcode, not a physical copy.

The “Game NOT Included” version, emphasis on ‘not’ to avoid any confusion, retails at $139.47. If you want the game, it costs nearly double the price at $260.36. That’s because you’re buying the Founders Edition, which means you get the full game, five days advanced access, the Tecumseh and Shawnee packs, post-launch content, and a few skins.

It’s Not The Only Collectors Edition Without A Game

As I said earlier, it’s a growing trend for collector’s editions to not include the game. Civ 7 is at least offering anoptionto get a copy with it, but it looks like it’s just a digital code rather than a swanky physical version.

Only last week, BioWare unveiledDragon Age: The Veilguard’snew collectors edition and—lo and behold—it doesn’t come with the game. Priced at $150, the Rook’s Coffer edition (which is just a fancy name for CE) and the currently unpriced Vyrantium Pack don’t include physical discs or even digital codes.

Life is Strange: Double Exposure’scollector’s edition from earlier this year in Junelikewise didn’t come with the game. It’s becoming the norm, as frustrating as it might be.
