Summary

Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka is interested in making Shadow evil again, re-exploring his more villainous roots. This comes after more than two decades of Shadow being the anti-hero of the series, as opposed to the antagonist he introduced as inSonic Adventure 2.

This comes from an interview withPolygon, in the run-up to the release ofSonic X Shadow Generations. Here, Iizuka briefly touches on his future plans for the character, revealing that he would find it “interesting” to make Shadow evil again.

It Would Be “Interesting” For Shadow To Be Evil Again, Says Sonic Team Head

“In Sonic Adventure 2, if you go through all the different stories, you have probably run into Shadow getting revenge on the entire world and being… pretty much evil,” says Iizuka, explaining Shadow’s role in his debut game.

“Ever since Sonic Adventure 2, we haven’t really explored that ‘Evil Shadow’ presentation of the character,” he continues. “He’s always been on a different kind of spectrum. But maybe in the future it’ll be interesting to come back and revisit Shadow being not so nice, maybe even as far as evil, as far as the other characters may see him.”

While fans are pretty split on what they want from Shadow as a character, many are ecstatic to see Iizuka entertain the idea of Shadow being a bad guy again.

We’ll have to wait and see if anything comes of this, but in the meantime, Shadow fans are hardly hurting for more material. Sonic X Shadow Generations launches on October 25, giving us a remaster of the original Sonic Generations with an added Shadow campaign. After that, we have the next movie,Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which is adapting the story of Sonic Adventure 2.

We finally got a trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 earlier this week, giving us our first look at how Shadow is being adapted for the big screen. Here, we very much have the villainous take on the character that Iizuka referred to - albeit now with voice acting from Keanu Reeves. The film will premiere on December 20.
