Rocksteadyhas reportedly been hit with a wave of layoffs, predominantly affecting the QA department. According to staff, the poor performance ofSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguewas cited as the reason behind the job cuts.
This news was just broken byEurogamer, who cites anonymous sources within Rocksteady. Here, it’s said that the QA department has been cut from 33 devs to just 15. The remaining staff say they have been told that product quality will suffer as a result of these layoffs.
In addition to this, the remaining devs say they are expected to shoulder the work of departing coworkers. It isn’t clear what this means for the ongoing development of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which has received two seasons worth of content so far.
Rocksteady’s company,Warner Bros., has not commented on these reported layoffs at the time of writing.
Seasonal updates appear to have done little to bring players back to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. On Steam,the release of the second two led to a peak of just 572 players. Prior to this, the devshalted their weekly community updates with fans back in June, leading some to fear that support would dwindle.
Despite the failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Rocksteady is best known for the widely loved Batman Arkham games. This kicked off with Batman: Arkham Asylum in 2009, with Suicide Squad continuing the universe after the studio left the Batman games behind.
However, Suicide Squad failed to live up to the previous games in the series. It was met with negative reviews from both fans and critics alike when it launched this February. Warner Bros. quickly admitted thatthe game had “fallen short” of its expectations.
