In a statement posted onTwitter,and shared byBloomberg, Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said, “According to our constitution, the state is obliged to take the necessary measures to protect our children,” adding that the country will “protect and support the best interests of our children, the guarantor of our future.”
He continued, “We respect the laws and regulations in countries where we operate and share local lawmakers’ commitment to children,” saying that “Attempts to undermine our social structure, abuse of children, encouragement of violence, and activities that will negatively affect the development of our children, each of whom is a precious gift, will never be allowed.”
This ban follows a ban in Turkeyon image sharing social platform Instagram, in which one of President Recap Tayyip Erdogan’s aides criticized the site for alleged censorship of posts linked to Palestine.
In response to the ban, Bloomberg received a comment from Roblox, which said that it is “working together to ensure Roblox is back online in Türkiye as soon as possible.”
In a further comment toEurogamer, the Roblox team said, “We’ve spent almost 20 years making Roblox one of the safest online platforms for our users, particularly the youngest, and ensuring the safety of our users is at the core of everything we do,” adding, ““We respect the laws and regulations in countries where we operate and share local lawmakers' commitment to children.”
The ban in Turkey could be the first of many, with Roblox facing dozens of lawsuits over the years, with a high-profile case coming in 2022 with the game being accused of “enabling the sexual and financial exploitation of a child.”
