Summary

Over the past few days,No Man’s Skycreator Sean Murray has been doinghis traditional social media ritualwhenever a new update is on the way. This time, Murray has been using planet emojis to tease what Hello Games has been working on, which is very fitting now that we know the next update is called Worlds Part 1, which will give the No Man’s Sky universe a complete refresh with new tech, gameplay, and things to discover.

Worlds Part 1 was announced earlier today in a new trailer, with asecond deep dive trailershowcasing some of the new technology and planet changes that will be included in the update. For starters, No Man’s Sky has implemented some new water technology to create waves and reflections, vastly improving the oceans players have seen so far. Planets that feature large oceans will feel completely different, your ship will be able to land on the surface of the water, and waves will react to the weather and newly added wind patterns.

On top of that, Hello Games has also been working with new cloud technology to get them looking more stunning than ever before. Murray says that one of his favorite things to do in the game is fly through the clouds and into space, and players will now be able to land on a planet and see more beautiful skies with “tons of variety.”

We then see all of these systems working together to create a truly incredible moment, as a player walks through a field during a storm, with trees and nearby fauna blowing violently in the wind. New “volumetrics” have also been added, which will batter players with all kinds of weather conditions like rain, blizzards, and fog, to make each planet feel unique to explore.

Murray also explains in the deep dive trailer that a lot of these changes coming in World Part 1 are thanks to Hello Games' work on Light No Fire, the studio’s second big open world game thatwas announced at The Game Awards last year. Having worked on the title for many years, Murray says that it feels like Hello Games is “bringing technology back from the future” to put in No Man’s Sky.

We still have no idea when Light No Fire will launch, as Hello Games hasn’t announced a release date just yet, though No Man’s Sky is technically giving us a better idea of what we can expect it to look like.

In terms of gameplay, Murray explains that the Worlds Part 1 update will add a new “Starship Troopers-inspired” Expedition that looks very combat focused and “feels very different” to those already in the game, and new creatures have been added for players to discover. Murray then ends the video by explaining that the update is called Worlds Part 1 because there’s “much more to come,” but he doesn’t expand on that little tease. We’ll definitely be keeping on eye on his Twitter account.
