Summary
Nintendohas shared an uncharacteristically creepy teaser focused on a man wearing a paper bag on his head called “Emio”, and fans have no idea what it’s all about.
As a company that primarily focuses on family-friendly experiences, Nintendo doesn’t really have all that much to do with horror, especially during the Switch’s lifetime. Sure, we’ve seen the Big N platform games likeFatal Frameand ZombieU, but the closest thing it has to a spooky series isLuigi’s Mansion. And, yeah, that doesn’t exactly count.
It seems like that might be about to change, though. Earlier today,Nintendo uploaded a mysterious little trailer for something called “Emio”, which appears to be teasing some kind of horror project. There’s not much to go off of so far, but it does seem like Nintendo might be hinting at a first-party horror game.
Nintendo Is Teasing A Creepy Game Called Emio
The teaser itself is only 15 seconds long, but it’s enough to set up a creepy vibe. The short video shows a grainy background that is inhabited by a person wearing a paper bag over their head that has a smiley face drawn on it. We see the person moving around and twitching unnaturally before the face on the bag changes to a more sinister look as the teaser ends.
The text shown in the trailer translates to “Smiling Man”, which is not only creepy but also the only thing that is shown in the trailer.
Alongside the trailer being uploaded to YouTube, Nintendo also has a website for the project, which features the man with a paper bag on his face staring into the camera and occasionally morphing into the scarier look from the trailer. The fact that Nintendo has made a website for the teaser(alongside tweeting it out on all its social media platforms) does seem to suggest that it’s first-party.
As you would expect from such a cryptic tease,Nintendo fans are already trying to figure out what it all means. The only thing that’s really been sleuthed so far is that Emio seems to be a horror game, as shown through the creepy vibes and the fact that the trailer is age-restricted. Beyond that, though, no one really seems to know what’s going on.
One ResetEra user suggested that the project could be coming from Bloober Team, as the studio revealed earlier in the year that it was working on a game that would be a Nintendo exclusive. We won’t know for sure until we see more of Emio, but colour us all intrigued for now.
