Summary
League of Legendshas hundreds of champions; playable characters with their own unique personalities, relationships, and powers.A lot of these characters are also interconnectedthrough complicated past relationships with each other, both familial and romantic, or through being direct enemies. With the introduction of new champions all the time, the vast expanse of character lore is bound to keep growing.
Every character’s backstory is fleshed outto a different extent, with the exception of a few enigmatic champions. There are so many different emotional arcs that the characters are only competing for whose story is the best writing, not for whose story is the most complete or complex.
10Diana And Leona
These two have their stories intertwined by default, especially sinceLeona and Diana represent the sun and the moon, respectively.They are distanced loverssincewhen Diana was imbued with the Aspect of the Moon, she was forced to leave the Solarias an outcast. Diana and Leona’s views on the Solari and Lunari are polar opposites, yet their past relationship keeps them looking for each other.
Leona continues to seek her outafter their last interaction ended in a near-deadly fight, and though the two are still estranged, the sun and the moon always find their way back to each other. It’s a hopeless romantic’s dream.
9Ivern
This champion is one of the friendliest around, but he wasn’t always that pure of heart. Ivern used to be a bloodthirsty Freljordian warlord known as Ivern the Cruel, but when he tried to take down the God-Willow of the Vastayan people, he disappeared andwas reborn as the friendly Green Father in order to start a new life as a reformed protector of nature.
His complete turnaround as a character makes himone of the most benevolent and loving champions in the game. He’s a traveler, a protector of every aspect of nature, and his magic is also destructive and powerful when nature is disrespected.
8Nunu And Willump
This little boy and his best friend, an enormous yeti, arean unlikely pair that met under possibly the most fairytale circumstances. Nunu set out to prove to his village that he was a hero by hunting and slaying a fierce monster, but Willump was who he found instead; a friendly creature that he ended up befriending.They’re played as one champion but are two separate characters.
These two are the definition of wholesome, and through Willump’s magic, the two of them are inseparable adventure buddies.They’re looking for Nunu’s mother to prove they can still be heroes, and they just might succeed with the power of their bond.
7Lucian And Senna
These two champions have a tragic yet compelling romance story. Lucian and Senna fought together against the Black Mist, and Lucian remains determined to free his love from her cursed existence pursued by evil. The two wereseparated by death when Thresh claimed Senna’s soul with his lantern, but when Lucian shattered the lantern,Senna was resurrected, although not the same as she was before.
Lucian’s struggle with darkness for Senna’s sake and Senna’s sacrifice for Lucian make for such a strong bond that not even Senna’s essential death could change it. The two of them are still fighting by each other’s side, the most steadfast lovers.
6Kindred
The Lamb and the Wolf represent Death itself, so it stands to reason that as one champion, they would be slightly unsettling. The way they speak, though, conveys a wisdom that predates almost every champion.Wolf chases down those who refuse death or try to escape it, and Lamb eases those who accept their fate into their afterlife. Together, they are inevitable.
This champion is always hunting, always traveling across Runeterra, and as Kindred, they’re essentially a god figure. They’re even honored in war, since either Lamb or Wolf comes for every victim. It’s a poetic ending and a beautiful personification of death.
5Soraka
This divine champion is known as one of the besthealer and support championsto play, but even in her backstory, she seeks to help and heal. As a celestial being,she gave up her immortality to help guide mortals to their full potential, believing the cruelty of the world was just due to their misinterpretation of that potential. It goes without saying that she’s an optimist and a protector of humanity, too.
She saves as many as she can, butshe is also known to take vengeance on anyone who only intends to harm. Another divine figure, but turned mortal, Soraka travels where she wishes and helps who she wishes.
4Viego
Known as “The Ruined King”, Viego’s title alone makes him an interesting and complex character. He has one of the most tragic twists in his official lore, being crowned and then immediately losing his queen to poison.He eventually fell into madness trying everything to bring her back one way or another, and unfortunately letting his kingdom fall apart in the process.
He’s a champion living with a broken heart and creating nothing but destruction in his wake after beingresurrected a thousand years after his death. He’s basically a necromancer, too, which is terribly ironic for someone trying to bring his wife back from death.
3Fiddlesticks
If you love Lovecraftian horrors beyond mortal comprehension, you’ll probably loveFiddlesticks. Not only is his voice grating and terrifying,he stalks you and exposes you to your deepest fears. He’s ageless, always hunting, always hungry. With an unsettling scarecrow-like appearance,Fiddlesticks’s origin is completely unknown, speculated about by everyone.
There’s no doubt about him being a demon, but to make things scarier,his body is a puppet for the evil that lives in his ribcage,moving from victim to victim.He preys on fear, existing as long as fear itself exists.
2Xayah/Rakan
These lovers arethe Barbie and Ken of Vastaya, moving as a unit despite being separate champions and never seen without each other in the lore. They areVastayan rebels, seeking to reclaim their native lands from the humans, and Rakan made Xayah’s fight his own after seeing how passionate she was about their cause. He goes where she goes, and even when two players choose them together, they are a powerful duo.
Xayah is the more practical one, strategic and calculated, and Rakan, who is very in love with her, follows her plans, but with a bit more compassion for the humans as they go. Since joining forces, they have rallied hundreds to the Vastayan rebellion.
1Jinx
Jinx was, even beforeArcane,one of thebiggest wildcardsin all of League of Legends.Her pranks and mischief, while seemingly harmless at first, have an intentional anarchy to them, especially as Piltover’s biggest disturbance. She isconstantly wreaking havoc on even the most secure treasuries and vaults, with no clear goals except chaos and destruction.
If Arcane’s story, now that it’s wrapping up soon, makes its way into Jinx’s champion lore, then it’ll make her a clear winner when it comes to emotional impact and chaotic, anarchist villain arcs that actually make you root for the villain. She’s a fan favorite for sure.
