Summary
Eyeballistic’s CEO, Joe Tresca, appears to be teasing some kind of remaster for the originalMortal Kombat, although the glimpses we’ve seen of the potential project so far have been criticised for seemingly using AI.
Although Mortal Kombat 1’s launch might not have gone as smoothly as NetherRealm was hoping, it’s fair to say that excitement for the series has started returning in recent months. Not only are we approaching the end of the first Kombat Pack(and the reveal of the second at SDCC), butthere have also been rumbles of a Shaolin Monks revival of sorts, leaving plenty for the series to get up to in the future.
It seems that there’s even more Mortal Kombat goodness in the works, though. As reported by Insider Gaming, it seems that a remaster of the original Mortal Kombat trilogy might be in the works at Eyeballistic, which is something that we actually almost got all the way back in 2010 before the release of Mortal Kombat 9.
Eyeballistic’s CEO Seems To Be Teasing A Mortal Kombat Trilogy Remaster
The teases of a Mortal Kombat revival actually started a few weeks ago towards the end of June. Over on Twitter,Eyeballistic CEO Joe Tresca shared an image of Johnny Cage fighting Scorpion in Mortal Kombat 2, although the image is much higher resolution than the original game and looks like it’s been heavily remastered.
This was then followed up by another tease that showed a remastered version of the first Mortal Kombat game, which Tresca shared while saying, “Who can forget the game that started it all?”. With Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat 2 both having been shown off, it seems that we’re looking at a potential remastered trilogy from Eyeballistic, although it’s not clear ifWarner Bros.has given the green light.
Over on Eyeballistic’s website, it says that the team was working on a Mortal Kombat HD fan project that was initially given the green light by Warner Bros. before being cancelled due to fears of it cannibalizing sales of Mortal Kombat 11. Eyeballistic says that it’s now working on its own fighting game, but it appears that the project could be back in motion.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that a Mortal Kombat Trilogy remaster has been in development,as Other Ocean Interactive was working on a remastered collection all the way back in 2010.
Although it’d be great to see the original Mortal Kombat Trilogy get remastered,it’s worth noting that some fans have accused the two screenshots of using AI-generated art, something that Tresca hasn’t denied. When one user said they “don’t want AI trash” in the game, Tresca simply replied with, “I’ll take your opinion into consideration”, suggesting it might be the case. Tresca says that it’s currently just a work-in-progress, so it’s not clear if a potential final release will include these elements.
