Summary
It has been quite the newsworthy week for the team behind theModern Warfare 2Remastered mod project. After gaining significant popularity online, Activision sent the team an official Cease & Desist letter. That letter put the fan-made mod project on permanent ice.
Then,a former Call of Duty dev took to Twitter to criticize Activision’s decision, pointing to the fact that most of the original Infinity Ward team were former modders. Those sentiments were echoed by theCEO of FaZe Clan, who petitioned Activision to reconsider its decision.
Elsewhere, fans made their voices heard by review-bombing Modern Warfare Remastered on Steam.Within days, the game shifted from “Mostly Negative” reviewsto"Overwhelmingly Negative," as fans took issue with Activision putting an end to things.
Now, the person behind the mod is sharing their thoughts on why things came to an abrupt end.In a new YouTube video shared online, creator Watchful Wolf shared what happened to the H2M mod, as well as what’s coming next.
Blame It On Black Ops 6, Says Creator
As part of the video, Watchful Wolf shared that the reasoning in the Cease & Desist letter from Activision had a lot to do withthe upcoming Black Ops 6.
Here’s what they had to say:
Essentially, because of the popularity H2M was gaining and how close it is to Black Ops 6 releasing and kinda the marketing and the beta and stuff for like that… They did not want H2M interfering with possible sales of Black Ops 6.
It’s important to note that this is just a summation on behalf of Watchful Wolf about the letter. At the time of publication, the creator had not posted any official documentation from Activision stating the above.
That said, it’s probably best to take their opinion with a grain of salt until actual proof is shown. The reality is, as popular as the mod would be, it was still only accessible to a portion of Call of Duty’s potential audience. Players on PlayStation and Xbox, along with those who are less than internet savvy, would be unable to participate.
Sure, it might have had an effect, but not so much as to completely cannibalizeBlack Ops 6,which will already have impacted sales due to it being a day-one Game Pass title. It’s likely that, in the end, Activision is highly protective of their own IP.
Watchful Wolf maintains that they are done modding on Call of Duty, and that they will go and work on their own game. Only time will tell if that game will have the same allure as their mod project. More so, whether Activision will create its own Modern Warfare 2 Remastered multiplayer experience.
