Summary

AMarvel Rivalsdeveloper has confirmed that Venom’s unique Cyan Clash skin is a reference to his design inMarvel vs. Capcom 2, although the Rivals itself doesn’t actually admit that.

Yesterday marked the start of Marvel Rivals' closed beta, which opened the game up to loads of new players across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Beyond that, the closed beta also introduced an exclusive new costume for one of the game’s newest characters- Venom, who was onlyrevealed a few months ago during PlayStation’s State of Play.

The exclusive costume for Venom is called Cyan Clashand it paints everyone’s favourite symbiote galoot in a strikingly blue colour. If you’re a fan of Marvel video games, then the inspiration for the costume is very clear, but it’s just been outright confirmed by one of the game’s developers during a recent livestream.

Venom’s Cyan Clash Costume In Marvel Rivals Is A Marvel Vs Capcom Reference

Just a few days ago,Marvel Rivals' developers hosted a livestream to show off everything that’s included in the closed beta. That, of course, includes Venom, who is making his playable debut for the first time after his reveal a few months ago. Venom’s default design is great, but his unique Cyan Clash skin is sure to draw some eyessince it’s very clearly inspired by his look in Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

For those who don’t remember, Venom was uniquely shown off as blue in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, likely to make him stand out more on the screen. This look is one of his most iconic, and it’s something that Marvel Rivals is bringing back as a reward for players completing Galacta’s quests in the closed beta.

Although the inspiration is already pretty clear to anyone who has played Marvel vs. Capcom, it’s now been officially confirmed to be the Cyan Clash’s muse. During a recent livestream,Marvel Rivals' senior art director Dan LaDuca talked about Venom’s designand specifically called out how the Cyan Clash skin was brought to life.

“Some of you may recognise this colour, the cyan clash, it is a throwback. You can just kind of guess where it’s from there.”

While talking about it, LaDuca admitted that it was a purposeful throwback, noting that fans can probably figure out what it’s inspired by. LaDuca doesn’t go as far as saying Marvel vs. Capcom, but it’s very clearly what he’s talking about since that’s where Venom’s iconic blue alternate originated from.

Funnily enough, this is something thatMarvel Rivals won’t actually tell you as it lists the original appearance of Cyan Clash as “Marvel Rivals”. This is likely due to rights issues since Capcom isn’t involved in the game, but if Venom’s design looks familiar to you, there’s a very good reason for it.
