Summary
Well, that didn’t take long.
Marvel Rivals, the upcoming free-to-play literal hero shooter, which was just revealed a handful of months ago, andjust entered closed beta testing a few days ago, already has cheaters and hackers. Yes, you read that correctly. A game that was announced in Marchand that is still in a beta phasealready has bad actors trying to exploit the game.
The Numbers Don’t Lie, And They Spell Yikes
News regarding the influx of cheaters in Marvel Rivals comes from an official release on the game’s website from NetEase Games. There, the company revealed that, “Since the launch of our CBT, we have made significant strides in detecting and banning cheaters.” Those strides have led to the banning of 190 accounts so far.
In an interesting twist, the cheating accounts have been named in the release, along with the date of the incident and their Game ID. All of them are for the, “Use of third-party unauthorized software & malicious client hacking activities.”
As part of the release, the company stressed that, “We would like to remind all players to stay away from cheats and hacks. Using such tools not only ruins the gaming experience for others but also results in severe penalties, including permanent bans for the game.”
In other words, we will find you, ban you, name you and shame you.
It’s Been A Long Week For Cheaters
The 190 cheaters that have been banned from Marvel Rivals pales in comparison to theover 65,000 cheaters that recently got the boot in Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
While it’s unclear what method cheaters in Marvel Rivals were utilizing to exploit the game, in Call of Duty, the release of Modern Warfare 3 on Game Pass caused an issue with the proprietary RICOCHET Anti-Cheat sytem, where players were able to hide which platform they were on. All that bad actors had to do was make an account for Game Pass on PC and go to town. That has since been rectified, according to Activision.
Still, the recent development in Marvel Rivals goes to show that where there is a will, then there is a way. It doesn’t matter if the game is a concept or in beta, if there’s a way to cheat, then people will do so. It’s up to the developers to find ways to combat those cheaters and for players to be vigilant in reporting and staying away.
Otherwise, a budding game like Marvel Rivals stands to be a negative experience for everyone before it’s even had a chance to properly release.
