Honkai: Star Railhas no shortage of fascinating characters, butdeveloper miHoYohas never shifted away from March 7th as the poster girl for this turn-based sci-fi RPG. Considering that she isn’t the main character and the lore surrounding her is deliberately vague, you could be forgiven for assuming this is just because she has a cute character design.
The fact is that March 7th is one of the most intriguing characters introduced in the game, even over a year after the international launch of the game. For those of you wanting to know just who March 7th is, you can find all the most important points right here.
Who Is March 7th?
The most interesting thing about the backstory of March 7th is that we frankly know almost none of it.She remains an almost complete mystery, not only to the players but to herself and the other characters of Honkai: Star Rail.
March 7th was discovered by the crew of the Astral Express, the space-faring locomotive that the name Star Rail alludes to, some time before the opening events of the game. She was foundfloating through space, encased in a special kind of ice.
After being thawed out aboard the Astral Express,it was revealed that she had no memory whatsoever. She couldn’t explain who she was, where she came from, or how she came to be set adrift among the stars.
The ice that March 7th was frozen in was not typical ice, but rather a Six-Phased Ice. Welt stated that it is a substance bonded to the Imaginary Law, meaningit cannot be altered by any external forces whatsoever.
That very Six-Phased Ice would go on to become the crux of her abilities in battle, forming the arrows she fires from her bow. With no other sense of where to go,March 7th joined the crew of the Astral Express.
Why Is She Called March 7th?
One of the things many new players of Honkai: Star Rail first comment on when trying the gameis just how ridiculous the name March 7th is, and they’re not wrong to do so. Just March would have been fine, March 7th is very specific.
The answer to why she is called March 7th is very simple. It was the date she was thawed out of the ice. With no memory of who she was,she picked the date that was the beginning of her life as she knew it as her name.
Who Was March 7th Before?
Honkai: Star Rail knows the player wants answers about the history of March 7th, and so does March 7th herself. Althoughshe has no leads on her past, and no place to begin her investigation, that doesn’t mean she hasn’t tried.
During Fu Xuan’s Companion Quest, March 7th requests that the Master Diviner help her try tofind answers about her past using the Matrix of Prescienceto divine into her history before the Astral Express.
The Matrix of Prescience is used by diviners to predict the future, but it isn’t a source of prophecy in the mystical sense. It is a highly advanced machine withextrapolates on data to provide likely outcomes.
It can determine what is probable, butthose predictions are not predetermined outcomes and it can be proven wrong.
Every effort to divine into her history was unsuccessful, providing distorted results even for events which had happened after March 7th was thawed out. There should have been no reason for that, something which confused Fu Xuan.
The divination continually resulted in messages to March 7th not to look back, but to move towards the future instead. Rather than producing accurate visions of her past, known or unknown,it presented people she knew warning her to stop.
The closer their investigation drew to uncovering events from before the Astral Express found her, the more disrupted the predictions became, witha lone figure eventually revealing themselves as an unwelcome meddler.
This meddler was a Memokeeper, a representative from the Garden of Recollection, dedicated to the preservation of memories as part of their worship of the Aeon Fuli and the Path of Remembrance.
Fuli is an Aeon, a godlike figure who represents a Path, a philosophical concept. Fuli’s Path, Remembrance, is aboutthe recording and cataloging of the happenings of the universe.
The Memokeeper stressed that March 7th shouldn’t pry into her past, that she would be better off focusing only on who she was now and to look forward. But at March 7th’s insistence,she agreed to show her her origin.
The Memokeepershowed March 7th herself encased in ice. Whether she meant this was the origin of March 7th as she is now, or was meant to suggest March 7th truly has no past before the ice, was not made clear.
What Is Her Role In The Story?
March 7th is primarily a supporting character in the story of Honkai: Star Rail, a member of the party who backs up the main character and stands by them through the trials they encounter.
March 7th is a bubbly and energetic character, whose lack of memory allows her to serve the role of a character who asks questions about the lore of the setting. Although the main character is in a similar position,March 7th asking those questions keeps things moving.
As the Astral Express hits stops like Belabog, the Xianzhou Luofu and Penacony,March 7th remains a core cast member of the story without playing the leading role. She’s an important character, but not the main focus of the story.
How Does March 7th Learn To Use Swords?
With the 2.4 update of the game, March 7th received a new path and element, allowing the option for her to be an Imaginary Hunt character. This meanssignificant mechanical changesbut it also came with story content.
An invitation from Jing Yuan enticesthe Astral Express crew to return to the Xianzhou Luofu for a celebration known as the Luminary Wardance Ceremony, a festival focused on martial contests and displays.
Of course, things aren’t so simple as that, but for March 7th the focus is on her admiration of the sword skills she watches Yanqing and Yunli display. It issuggested by Huaiyan, Arbiter-General, that they apprentice March 7th.
The main character is able to switch between different Paths and Elements, changing their playstyle and mechanics to best suit what you prefer. March 7th having the same optionsuggests other characters may get the same treatment.
Dan Heng on the other hand has an entirely separate character for his alternate form,Dan Heng Imbibitor Lunae. miHoYo have shown a willingness to experiment, soit remains to be seen which approach will be the standard.
He suggests this not only for March 7th, who expressed an interest in learning butalso to help both of them grow. By teaching another, and working together to do it, they will also learn from the experience.
Provided Xianzhou clothing and weaponry, March 7th works hard to learn Cloud Knight swordplay under the tutelage of her young masters. Completingthe March to Mastery: A Star Is Born quest will unlock March 7th’s new skills.
