Summary
Black Myth: Wukongis absolutely packed with unique and fun characters that you will run into and learn about throughout the game’s multiple chapters. Each of these characters has a distinct personality and charm, and a large part of why so many of them are easy to fall in love with is thanks to the amazing voice talent that went into bringing them to life.
One of the fun things about playing plenty of different games is that you’ll start to notice on occasion that some voices might show up in different games you’ve played, so where might you have heard the cast of Black Myth: Wukong before?
8Sun Wukong - Mark Ota
Our titular character Sun Wukong, while not the character you spend the majority of the game playing as (that honour goes to our largely silent protagonist The Destined One), we still get to hear plenty of his voice throughout different cutscenes.
This character was brought to life by Mark Ota, who has only had a couple other roles in the video game industry, but one you might recognize if you’re a fan of theAce Attorneyseries is Ryunosuke Naruhodo, the protagonist of the two prequel games, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles.
7Zhu Bajie - Jack Ayres
While we don’t get to hear a lot from our protagonist, The Destined One, a character that we meet in Chapter 3 that quickly becomes a surrogate voice for our main character, is Zhu Bajie. He’ll spend multiple sections of the game tagging along, aiding in fights, and quipping all the way.
These lines are read by Jack Ayres, who has only had a handful of other roles in the industry. If you’re a fan ofSmite, you’ll likely have heard his voicework with Slasher Loki and Celestial Deliverer Mercury, or if you playAnother Eden: The Cat Beyond Time and Space, he voices Dewey.
6Erlang - Andrew Koji
Our antagonist, whom wemeet at the very startof Black Myth: Wukong, and don’t see again until much later on, is Erlang. Erlang is a threatening figure, and the intense voice work done by Andrew Koji helps make the character work so well.
Koji has only had two other credited roles in video games. The more recognizable one is Hien Rijin from theFinal Fantasy 14Stormblood expansion, but the much more obscure pick is Tau Air Caste from Battlefleet Gothic Armada.
One of the most threateningearly bossesthat will likely be one of the first roadblocks in Black Myth: Wukong is Whiteclad Noble. This character is also quite passionate in his hatred for The Destined One when meeting him, and these lines are brought to life by Vincent Lai.
Lai also voices a couple of other characters in Wukong, and he’s also voiced a couple of the playable characters inEiyuden Chronicles, Zabi and Kurtz. He usually has a more villainous streak, being the horrifying voice of The Hound fromThe Medium.
4Xu Dog - Jim Johnson
When you first meet Xu Dog in Black Myth: Wukong, you might be unnerved by the medicine-obsessed dog’sskittish disposition, but once you get to know more about the character, he calms down a bit. Luckily, Jim Johnson is able to bring the range of this interesting and helpful character to life.
Johnson only has one other credited role in the video game industry, but it’s one that you’ll have likely heard before if you’re a Soulslike fan. Not the most glamorous character, Johnson also voiced Dung Eater fromElden Ring, a horrific serial killer that The Tarnished One will have the option of defeating.
3Yin Tiger - James Alexander
It’s surprising how easy it is to miss the option to upgrade your armour in Black Myth: Wukong, with theRuyi ScrollRealm being avoidable in the main quest line. But if you manage to make your way to the smithy, you’ll meet the stoic and slightly cocky Yin Tiger.
Yin Tiger has a well-characterised personality in his dialogue, and this is thanks to the voice work of James Alexander. Alexander is also behind five of the playable characters in Eiyuden Chronicles, but if you’re both a Horizon and VR fan, you’ll likely have heard him as the protagonist’s escort Kavad inHorizon Call of the Mountain.
2Yellowbrow - Ramon Tikaram
One of the best characterised villains within Black Myth: Wukong is the final boss of Chapter 3, Yellowbrow. The overconfident buddha is one of the toughest enemies in the game, and his constant gloating makes it even more satisfying to take him down.
His lines are all done by Ramon Tikaram who has a storied history of voice work in the gaming industry, with perhaps his two most notable roles (amongst many) being Rammatra fromOverwatch 2, as well as Dorian fromDragon Age Inquisition.
1Loong Chen - Kerry Shale
Another important but unfortunately easy-to-miss character is Loong Chen, who starts off the entire quest line to unlock the Ruyi Scroll Realm, as well as acts as your sweet gardener once you’ve got him his medicine.
This dragon’s voice is done by Kerry Shale, a voice actor behind a lot of other characters who you might recognize. This list includes Jack and Francis from The Medium, a large array of Lego characters from multiple franchises anywhere from Marvel to Ninjago, a couple of one-off characters in The Amazing World of Gumball, and perhaps the most entertaining:LittleBigPlanet’s take on Lex Luthor.
