Summary
Marvelbroke the internet at the weekend by revealing who will play Dr. Doom in theMCU. Any actor announced in a role that significant would always be big news, but Marvel revealed it will be Robert Downey Jr, the man who playedIron Manin the MCU for more than a decade, who will return for the role. The decision has been heavily criticized by quite a lot of fans, but as with almost anything when it comes to Marvel, there’s been a lot of crossover between Dr. Doom and Iron Man in the comics. Including the former becoming the latter, a character that was dubbed Infamous Iron Man and was so significant that it has its ownFunko Pop.
Spoilers dead ahead for anyone who plans on going back and reading the Infamous Iron Man comics for hints at where Marvel might be pulling inspiration from for its next steps in the MCU. In Infamous Iron Man, Tony Stark is left in a coma after the events of Civil War 2. Victor Von Doom takes the hero’s place, creating his own Iron Man armor and becoming Infamous Iron Man. It’s this look that the Funko Pop with the same name is based on.

While a good-looking Pop, it was released in 2020 and since it was connected to a comic book character that hasn’t been used elsewhere until now, it wasn’t exactly the most sought-after figure. That changed almost immediately and now people lucky enough to own an Infamous Iron Man Funko Pop have been listing the figures for a lot more than they would have done three days ago.
Expensive Iron Man
An Infamous Iron Man listing on eBaywith a little less than seven hours to go at the time of typing this is currently selling for $280 with 44 bids and counting. It seems likely the Pop will end up selling for far more than $300, especially whenthere’s another listing on eBaythat has already sailed past that threshold with 69 bids and still more than a day to go until the auction ends. There are some listings where you may buy the Pop for quite a bit less than $200 outright, no bidding necessary, which at this moment in time feels like a steal.
Even though the Infamous Iron Man run is one of the most overt ways Iron Man and Dr. Doom have merged in the comics, it seems unlikely it will be where the MCU is going with Downey Jr. It’s possible the story is manipulated in some way, but in Infamous Iron Man, it’s not Stark, or anyone who looks like him, in the armor. There are other ways Marvel can make this work though, and while I feel like I’m in the minority, I’m excited to let Disney cook and see where this goes.
