Crytek has announced thatHunt: Showdownis getting a current-gen upgrade called Hunt: Showdown 1896, which is scheduled to launch next month on August 15.
When you think of the extraction shooter genre, what game comes to mind? For most gamers, it’ll be Escape from Tarkovbut those of you with real class willlikely think of Crytek’s western hit - Hunt: Showdown. Originally launched all the way back in 2018, Hunt: Showdown has stood tall as one of the most popular games in the genre and one that hasn’t slowed down a bit despite its age.
As great as Hunt: Showdown is, though, it can always get better. Some time ago, Cryrek promised that anew version of the game would be released in 2024 which would upgrade the engineand update it for the modern era. That time is coming up very soon, as the current-gen version of Hunt: Showdown has officially been revealed.
Hunt: Showdown’s Current-Gen Upgrade Is Called Hunt: Showdown 1896
That current-gen version is called Hunt: Showdown 1896 and it’s going to be launching as a free upgrade for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC players on August 15. Over on Crytek’s website,a press release was shared that detailed everything that’s coming with the improved release, which will “leap forward chronologically and head west of the Bayour Backwaters” to Colorado.
Hunt: Showdown 1896 improves upon the original game by using CRYENGINE 5.11, which overhauls the visuals significantly and improves the audio. This can best be seen with 1896’s first new map, Mammon’s Gulch, which will launch alongside the game next month. This unique map set in Colorado will feature 16 unique compounds and let you fight from up high or venture down into the deep mines to face “untold horrors”.
Crytek also confirmed that several of Hunt: Showdown’s original maps will be overhauled and restored following 1896’s release.
There is one big caveat to Hunt: Showdown 1896, though. The original version of the game on PS4 and Xbox One will no longer be playable, with the current-gen releases becoming the only way to experience Hunt: Showdown. All console players will automatically receive a free upgrade to the new version at no cost alongside their previous purchases and progress.
For players that haven’t yet made the upgrade, rest assured your Hunt legacy will be ready and waiting as soon as you choose to make the switch to PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X|S.
Sadly, if you’ve not got a PS5, Xbox Series, or PC to play Hunt: Showdown 1896 on, there isn’t really anything you can do but upgrade to the new version. That’s sure to be a bit of a controversial move, but Crytek does reassure players that their progress will be waiting for them when they get one of the supported platforms.
