Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddessis a game unlike many others. It has competent combat for its main character, Soh, while also giving you many villagers to cover your own weaknesses across its tower defence-adjacent levels. You can’t cover the entire map yourself, after all. The villagers are your backup, and you need to use them to the best of your ability.

To that end, you have the many Roles that the game doles out as you complete missions, letting you build a versatile group to counter any scenario. Read on to find out everything you need to know about each role, from when you get them to what they specialise in.

Thankfully, every Role in Kunitsu-Gami is unlocked over the course of the main story so there’s no chance of missing them.

How Many Roles Are There?

While you start with only the humble Woodcutter, the Roles available to the villagers will expand as you progress through the game, from attackers to utility and every base in between. In total, there are 12 Roles for you to choose from, though none of them are simply better than others.

Each Role below is listed in the sequential order in which you unlock them.

Marksman

Ranged unit with much higher damage and range, but lower firing rate than the Archer. Very powerful, but even less effective in melee range.

Priest

Used to remove buffs from enemies, making them very situational. Can be upgraded to remove toxic pools and enemy possession.

Cannoneer

A slow-firing, long-range unit. Has no melee capabilities and a very slow firing rate. Great against groups and for knockback.

Sorcerer

At night, Sorcerers will begin casting a spell that, when charged, triggers a unique cutscene that damages all enemies in the level.

Ninja

The Ninja acts on their own initiative, moving across the map and attacking enemies both at range and close-up as they feel fit.

Defeat Yatsukahagi

As you can see, there’s quite a variety of Roles in there and not all of them will fit every stage. On top of that, some Roles, like the Sumo, are not only quite expensive butrestricted to certain Villagersso you’ll have to think tactically before choosing who you want to use in any given level.

Every Upgrade For Each Role

Every Role in Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess comes with its own upgrade tree featuring six nodes.Four of these are stat upgrades, while the remaining two are active abilitiesthat the Role can use whenever that dramatically improves their utility and self-sufficiency.

The Woodcutter is your bread-and-butter Role. Theydeal steady damage, attack fast, and can even chase down enemies. They’re far from the strongest, though they cover a good selection and are a help in just about every level.

Can now attack while running and deplete enemy resist gauge.

As you might expect, Archers excel at range.Their firing rate is quite highand though they’re not extremely powerful, theycan target certain enemies that melee units can’tand soften up tougher enemies before they reach the front lines.

Archers can only be placed at higher elevations to keep them out of reach of enemies.

The Shaman model as seen in-game in Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess.

Incendiary Shot

Increases firing rate and uses fire arrows. Now depletes enemy resist gauge.

The Ascetic is a very fun Role. They deal no damage until fully upgraded, thoughtheir slowing ability is immensely powerful. It affects all enemies, from measly cannon fodder to gargantuan bosses.

The Spearman model as seen in-game in Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess.

Pair them with a Sumo or Woodcutter and you’ll have enemies defeated before they can get anywhere near Yoshiro.

20

The Marksman model as seen in-game in Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess.

Barrier now damages and weakens enemies.

Thieves featureno combat potential whatsoever, even when upgraded. This is reflected in the fact that not even their health can be upgraded. Instead, theydig up any treasure that you point them towards during the day, and collect crystals at night so you can prioritise enemies.

Can now open locks on doors and chests.

Magpie

Thief will collect dropped crystals at night rather than go into hiding.

The Sumo role isall about generating aggro. They aren’t the highest damage dealer, but theyhave immense health. In a large area around them, all enemies will be attracted to them.

Pairing them with higher-damage units will let you take them down while the Sumo keeps them distracted.

Sumo Stomp

Stomps, causing enemies to stumble and take damage. Depletes enemy Resist Gauge.

Onslaught

Performs an onward assault that knocks back enemies. Greatly depletes enemy Resist Gauge.

30

Shamans are your tried-and-true healers. They cannot battle, butthey constantly perform healing at night.

Put them just behind your front-line units to keep them in tip-top shape no matter what comes their way. Just keep in mind she cannot heal herself.

Resurrection

When the Shaman is defeated, she will revive defeated Villagers and fully heal them. Only activates once per night.

The Spearman is a buffed-up, slower version of the Woodcutter. What they lack in movement, they make up for in damage. They’re mainly stationary but can deal out some devastating damage all the while.

The Marksman is themost powerful ranged unit in the gamefor single-character damage. They lack the speed of Archers and have no means of protecting themselves up close, though the sheer range and damage they possess make it so most enemies won’t approach them anyway.

The Priest is a very specific Role. By default, they remove buffs from enemiesand can be upgraded to alsoremove the toxic pools certain enemies create as well as remove possession.

With how situational they are, it’s best to preserve them until you know you need one, rather than sacrificing a villager you may not use.

Spell range Increase 2

Can release Yoshiro and Villagers from Hidarigumi possession.

Though the third ranged unit in the game, the Cannoneer fulfils a Role no other can -ranged crowd control. The Cannoneer aims not for a single enemy but a whole group of them. They are immensely slow, but the knockback they hold as well as the impressive ranges makes them a great backup unit.

Fire Flower

Shoots fireworks, causing sparks that damage enemies in a wider area.

Enduring Flame

Sparks from fireworks remain on the ground, damaging enemies that come in contact.

The Sorcerer is an extreme utility Role, but one that is always worth having if you can bear the high crystal cost. They cannot do any actions by themselves, either attacking or defending themselves, only chanting. Once they have completed their incantation, however, the attack they unleash will almost always defeat every enemy in the level.

Paper Guardian

Summons a Shikigami to protect the Sorcerer. Can only be used once a night.

God of Retribution

Shikigami can now intercept and attack enemies, depleting their Resist Gauge.

Unlike most other Roles in the game, the ninjadoes not follow commands. Theyact independently, jumping across the map to take down any enemies that others are not targeting. They have both ranged and melee capabilities as well, making them quite versatile.

They are, however, quite prone to dying quickly due to how often they jump right into the fray.

Elusion Jutsu

When their health is fully depleted, the Ninja can revive themselves. Only usable once per night.
