Elden Ringis filled with items that often lack clear explanations about their usage or purposes, which can be frustrating at times. In certain scenarios, you may find yourself holding an item without knowing how to use it, potentially skipping a crucial step in a quest or interaction with an NPC. The same is true in the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, where you will likely obtain items without understanding their purpose.
One interesting item is Miquella’s Great Rune. Based on your experience from the base game, you might assume you need to activate it like the other great runes. However, it is labeled as a tool and is usable, which can be confusing. This prompts you to wonder about its function, leading you to seek out guides like this one to clarify what you can do with it.

Where To Find Miquella’s Great Rune
Miquella’s Great Runeis adrop from the Scadutree Avatar, a boss located at the Scadutree Base and this is an optional fight that you might miss. To reach this location, you first need to access the Church District in Shadow Keep. This can be done viathe route leading to the Cathedral of Manus Metyr.
From the cathedral, head northwest. Initially, you’ll find the area filled with water, whichyou must drain to access the bottom, where the boss fight awaits.
Make sure tocheck our walkthroughif you need additional steps to help.
After draining the Church District, you will be able to access the bottomand the Site of Grace there. From the Site of Grace, head northand enter the room ahead, filled with exploding enemies. you’re able to either kill them or bypass them, but regardless of your choice, head to the end of the room, turn right, andfollow the pathahead. It’s straightforward.
At the end of this path, you’ll come across an open area where you will fight the Scadutree Avatar. Defeat it to receive its Remembrance andMiquella’s Great Rune.
What To Do With Miquella’s Great Rune
Miquella’s Great Rune functions differently from the previous great runes you acquired in the base game. Instead of activating it at a Divine Tower,it is labeled as a tool that can be used. However, its effects won’t take place until you reach the final boss of the DLC,Promised Consort Radahn.
This fight is arguably the hardest in the DLC, and while Miquella’s Great Rune won’t necessarily make the battle easier,it will help you avoid a deadly attack.
During the second phase of the boss fight, Radahn and Miquellawill perform a grab attack that does not damage you but applies an insta-kill debuff to your character, indicated bya glowing symbol on your head.
If you get grabbed a second time while this debuff is active, you will die immediately.
Miquella’s Great Rune is crucial here.It allows you to reset the debuff on your characterand remove the glowing symbol from your head, meaning you will need to be grabbed twice again before the insta-kill effect takes place.
It is a reusable itemafter all, so feel free to use it as many times as necessary during this fight.
