Diablo 4has greatly buffed most Uniques in Season of the Infernal Hordes, turning them into centerpiece items for many builds. Your best source of Uniques is from pinnacle bosses, endgame variants of seasonal and campaign bosses that pack a serious punch. Each boss has a curated loot table, so farming for the Unique you need isn’t too challenging.

That’s assuming you have the summoning materials to challenge them. Each boss requires several summoning materials to fight, many of which are tied to repeatable endgame activities like Nightmare Dungeons. Before we cover the best farming spots for each summoning material, let’s first explain what summoning materials are and where they’re generally found.

What Are Summoning Materials?

Summoning materials are required to battlepinnacle bosses. Each boss can only be summoned in a specific dungeon with the correct materials, most of which drop from mid to late-game content like Helltide and Nightmare Dungeons.Pinnacle bosses are the primary source of Mythic Uniques in Diablo 4,so virtually every player will want to farm these bosses at some point to get their hands on a Harlequin Crest or Tyrael’s Might.

Every pinnacle boss can be summoned in one of two states: Normal and Tormented. Normal bosses drop one kill’s worth of loot and have a 1.5% chance of dropping a Mythic Unique.Tormented variants dropfivekills worth of loot but only cost three times the materials, making it more cost-effective to farm Tormented bosses when you can. They also have five shots ofdropping a Mythic Unique, giving you roughly a 7% chance of obtaining one.

Beast in the Ice

All Tormented Bosses

The best source of Stygian Stones istheInfernal Hordes activity. They are an uncommon drop from theresource chest in Tiers 7 and 8.You can expect to earn roughlytwo Stygian Stones per run, potentially more if you’re lucky or have a particularly good run.

Stygian Stones can also drop from The Pit, although the drop chance is fairly low. Farming Infernal Hordes is always more efficient.

Stygian Stones are used tosummon Tormented variants of all pinnacle bosses. You need one Stygian Stone per Tormented summon, regardless of the boss you’re attempting to kill. So long as you open the resource chest on occasion in the Infernal Hordes, you should have more than enough Stygian Stones to farm Tormented bosses. Standard summoning materials will be your main bottleneck.

Lord Zir (9 Normal, 27 Tormented)

TheBlood Maiden in Helltide has a high chance of dropping at least one vial of Exquisite Blood. You can summon this boss by sacrificing three Baneful Hearts at the boss' summoning altar, which is usually marked on your map as a Whisper objective. They can also drop from World Events, although this isn’t guaranteed like the Hell Fiend.

Baneful Hearts are a random drop fromHelltide chests. There’s drop protection in place, so you’ll eventually get a heart if one doesn’t drop.

You’ll need27 Exquisite Blood samples tosummon Tormented Lor Zir, a fairly popular boss that drops the highly coveted Fractured Winterglass Unique for Sorcerer. You can find his summoning altar in The Darkened Way dungeon in Fractured Peaks.

Beast in the Ice (9 Normal, 27 Tormented)

Distilled Fear is arguably the easiest material to farm, as it’s aguaranteed drop from T21+ Nightmare Dungeons.Simply clearing the dungeon will award Distilled Fear, usually one or two. This material also has a high drop rate from Treasure Goblins, although there aren’t any consistent methods for farming Treasure Goblins specifically.

Beast in the Icerequires 27 Distilled Fear to summon as a Tormented variant. You can summon this boss from the Glacial Fissure dungeon in Fractured Peaks, located a short distance south of Kyovoshad. It has arguably the most dangerous boss mechanic of the normal pinnacle bosses, although you can easily bypass this if your build has enough DPS. Be sure you have a strong build before farming the Beast in the Ice.

Grigoire (9 Normal, 27 Tormented)

Living Steel always drops from theTortured Gift chests in Helltide.Standard chests give one Living Steel when opened, while theGift of Living Steel chest always drops five. The Living Steel chest costs 275 Aberrant Cinders and spawns twice per Helltide.

As with all pinnacle bosses, you’ll need27 Living Steel tosummon Tormented Grigoire,a deadly automaton located in the Hall of the Penitent dungeon in Khejistan. Since you’re able to earn Living Steel so easily from Helltide,Grigoire is arguably the most time-efficient boss to farm.A full Helltide clear should give you enough Living Steel to fight Tormented Grigoire at least two times, usually three.

Varshan (5 Normal, 15 Tormented)

Malignant Hearts are the most annoying to farm. They commonly drop from Whisper Caches. Each cache can drop a heart outright or drop a random body part—head, hand, or bone. These body parts can be exchanged for Malignant Hearts at the Alchemist;they don’t serve any other purpose. Beyond caches, you can also find Malignant Hearts from Elite enemies that periodically spawn in Helltide and World Boss fights.

Fortunately, you don’t need 27 Malignant Hearts to summon a boss.Tormented Varshan only requires 15 Malignant Hearts to summon. You can find her in the Malignant Burrow beside the Tree of Whispers in Hawezar.

Andariel (2 Normal, 6 Tormented)

Pincushioned Dolls are a guaranteed reward fromBeast in the Ice.A normal difficulty kill will award one doll, while a Tormented kill awards five.Six Pincushioned Dolls are required to summon Tormented Andariel, a pinnacle boss located in the Hanged Man’s Hall within Kehjistan.Andariel is easily the hardest pinnacle boss in Diablo 4. Make sure you have a good build before fighting her.

Sandscorched Shackles always drop fromLord ZIr.Slaying this boss on normal difficulty will award one shackle, while Tormented kills will always drop five. When possible, you should always farm the Tormented variant of this boss. Pincushioned Dolls are also needed to summon Andariel. You only need two shackles for a normal summon, but her Tormented variant requires six.

Duriel (2 Normal, 6 Tormented)

Shards of Agony always drop from successfulGrigoirekills. Standard difficulty drops one shard; Tormented spawns five instead. You’ll need a total of six stones to summonDuriel, a difficult pinnacle boss located in the Gaping Crevasse dungeon within Kehjistan. You’ll also need six Mucus-Slick Eggs to summon them. Be ready for a tough fight.

The final summoning resource is the Mucus-Slick Egg, which you may earn by defeating Varshan on any difficulty. The normal variant drops a single egg. If you can handle the Tormented variant, you’ll earn five eggs instead. This is the second material used to summon Duriel. Normal difficulty requires two Mucus-Slick Eggs, while Tormented difficulty requires six.
