Chapter Two inBlack Myth: Wukongis packed with secrets that can overwhelm anyone. Between hidden locations and tough bosses around every corner, this region doesn’t hold back. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, you’ll stumble upon quest items like the Old Rattle-Drum that will leave you scratching your head.
Much like any Key Item, the Old Rattle-Drum’s purpose isn’t stated outright. However, when you explore Chapter Two, you’ll notice your vision turning hazy in certain places while hearing a child’s voice directing you to play the Rattle Drum. That’s the quest summed up, and you’ll need to play it at three specific spots to challenge a fearsome Yaoguai Chief.

How To Get The Old Rattle-Drum
TheOld Rattle-Drumis a Legendary Key Item in thepossession of theTiger’s Acolyte, and to obtain the item, you mustdefeat him in a boss fight.
Some lore deep dive reveals that this item oncebelonged to the son of the Tiger’s Acolyte, who was tragicallykilled by the angry villagers of Yellow Wind Ridge. Now, the Tiger’s Acolyte aimlessly wanders the shifting sandstorms,cutting down any passerbywho dares cross his path as he searches for his lost son.

The voice you’ll hear during the Old Rattle-Drum quest is that of the boy’s spirit.
How To Find The Tiger’s Acolyte Boss
The Tiger’s Acolytewaits on a bridgeacross theWindrest Hamlet Keeper’s Shrinein theYellow Wind Formation. However, you’ll need toovercome two tough bossesbefore reaching him.
Chapter Two begins near theSandgate Village, where the Destined One must take on theKing of the Flowing Sands and his Second Son. After that, you’ll have the option of two paths: thebridge on the rightleads to Fright Cliff whilegoing left leads to the Crouching Tiger Temple.

To reach the Tiger’s Acolyte, you musttake the path on the left, where you’llchallenge and defeat theTiger Vanguardat the Crouching Tiger Temple. Once he’s down, the path to the Yellow Wind Formation opens up, and from there, it’s asimple runto the Tiger’s Acolyte.
Old Rattle-Drum Quest Walkthrough
Upon defeating the Tiger’s Acolyte and acquiring the Old Rattle-Drum, you mustset out to the following three spots, where the boy will cue you to play the instrument.
Play The Old Rattle-Drum In Windrest Hamlet
The first location isextremely close to the bridgewhere you fought the Tiger’s Acolyte. On your way to the Windrest Hamlet Keeper’s Shrine, you’ll have passed by asmall settlement.
Return to that settlement, and as youhead through the wooden gate,turn left to an open areasurrounded by a bunch ofWithered Corpses. You’llhear the little boy’s voicewith thescreen turning hazyas you close in on the area, signaling the Destined One to play his Rattle Drum.

Play The Old Rattle-Drum In Windseal Gate
The Old Rattle-Drum can beplayed for a second timenearWindseal Gate. There are two ways to reach this area, and both involve defeating theStone Vanguardin Fright Cliff. This boss drops theSterness of StoneKey Item, which, along with theKeeness of Tigerfrom theTiger Vanguard,unlocks the colossal gatein theRat King andSecond Rat Prince’s boss arena.
This opens up ashortcut to Windseal Gate. However, as you descend the stairs, take thefirst right near the wooden bridge. Across theoverhanging wooden structure, theboy’s voice will prompt you once moreto play the instrument. Alternatively, after defeating the Stone Vanguard, you can head left toward theRock Clash Platform Keeper’s Shrineandslide down a sandy hillto reach theWindseal Gate Keeper’s Shrine; beyond this checkpoint, across the same wooden bridge, is the area from earlier.
Play The Old Rattle-Drum In Sandgate Village
The boy gives acryptic clueto the final location -a well- where you’ll need to play the Old Rattle-Drum one last time. This specific well is situated near theEarth Wolf’s bossarena, close to theVillage Entrance Keeper’s ShrineinSandgate Village.
If you haven’tunlocked the shortcutto theEarth Wolfyet, you’ll need to take the long way around.Look for a gap in the stone wallin the boss’s arena next to the shrine whereHorse Guaiis tied.
As you pass through it, thescreen will go grayas usual, but theboy’s voice won’t guide youthis time around. Instead,move a bit further until the"Use" prompt appears. Afterward, a cutscene follows, where theboy’s spirit materializesandinvites you down the well.
The old Rattle-Drum quest reaches its climax at thebottom of the well, where theMad Tigerlurks below. There’s a reason the child’s father is named the Tiger’s Acolyte. As the cryptic lore reveals further, theTiger’s Acolyte sought help from the Mad Tigerat the bottom of the well tosave his ailing sonfrom the deadly yellow wind.
The wind also did a number on the Mad Tiger, so as part of the bargain, the acolyte had tolead unsuspecting villagers to the well, allowing theTiger to regain strength. However, thevillagers eventually caught on, and in the end, they tragicallytook their anger out on the innocent child.
When the Destined One follows the boy’s spirit into the well, they’regreeted by the Mad Tiger. Thisquest culminates in a boss fightwith the beast, and upon defeating him, you’llearn a bunch of crafting materials, along with theBuried in the Sand achievementand theMad Tiger’s Spirit.
Be sure to grabPlaguebane Gourdfrom a nearby chest before heading out of the well.
