Spellcasting is a major part of your arsenal as you battle Pi-rats and other menaces while sailing the high seas inCat Quest 3. You begin with only one spell slot, but through a mix of clever exploration and an eye for a certain NPC, you can eventually obtain up to four mana crystals.

Mana crystals refill over time as you thwack and shoot with melee and ranged weapons. Once a crystal is full, you can cast another spell - but, again, you’re stuck with just the single spell slot until you find more. In this guide, we’ll tell you where to do just that.

How To Use Magic In Cat Quest 3

First, a quick rundown on Cat Quest 3’s spells. You’ll obtain spells through various quests; the earliest available instance involvesspeaking with the shopkeep at the Magic Bone, the spell upgrade shop a bit west of the tavern.

Just talk to the shopkeep asecondtime to receive theLightnyan spell. Equip it in your inventory. At this point in the game, you may very well still have only one spell slot.

You’ll cast your new Lightnyan spell bypressing the button listed in the magic equip menu. As you gain spell slots, various shoulder buttons(or their PC keyboard equivalent)will serve for spellcasting.

The order in which you equip the spells dictates the buttons they’ll be assigned. Therefore,if you feel like you’re quicker with a particular button or key,be sure to assign them in an order that reflects it, with spells you’ll rely upon more greatly being linked to your preferred spots.

How To Increase Your Spell Slots

Now, let’s get down to business. You’ll add a second, third, and finally, a fourth spell slot to your equipment menu bytriggering strange visions of large-headed figureswho speak quite cryptically. These are invariably tied toa creature named Aelius.

Upon awakening from these visions, you’ll receive a notice that your mana count has increased by one, so don’t forget to equip another spell to your newfound slot immediately.

The question, then, iswhere to find Cat Quest 3’s vision sequencesthat’ll end with the uptick in spell slots. As best we can tell, there arethree in all. Here’s where we found them. For the record,we’re not sure if they need to be done in order, butprobablynot?

The First Upgrade

The first time we found Aelius, the creature was standing to the left of the Orion Ruins, a dungeon on an island calledFurtigua.

You ought to be able to spot the island on your map with ease, but if it helps,Furtigua is just south of Meowtallika Bay.

The Second Upgrade

Please be advised thatwe’re presently running on memory for this second upgrade. Which is to say,we’re 90 percent certain this is where we found it,but as you may see in the above screenshot, we didn’t manage to snag a pic of Aelius here.

Expect an update to this section ASAP. In the meantime, here’s where we believe we encountered the second vision:on the largest island in the Twilight Isles chain, just east of a treasure chest and beside a guidepost.

The Third Upgrade

The last upgrade is pretty hard to miss, actually. Following the acquisition of all three keys to the Volcano Mountain dungeon’s entrance at the Sunset Isles, Aelius will appear in the form ofa bizarrelypurpleparrot.

Aelius is, in other words, masquerading as one of theFort Beakon parrots who allow players to save their game and connect to local co-op.It feels like this upgrade is designed to virtually ensure that we get at least one spell upgrade before the finale.

That said, itispossible to venture into Volcano Mountain, battle the boss, andenter the point of no return without acquiring this crucial spell slot upgrade, so ensure you chat with Aelius prior to doing so.
