Black Loong is an optional boss you’ll encounter in the second chapter ofBlack Myth: Wukongand it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that they are likely the toughest foe you will have fought yet. His attacks strike quickly and deal a hefty amount of damage. Which is to say, this dragon can kill youshockinglyquickly.
Thankfully, despite being a somewhat overwhelming boss initially, I can show you how to navigate their nastiest attacks and make them far more manageable. This guide will take you through Black Loong’s attack patterns, and help you unravel his toughest attacks. With our help, you’ll send this dragon packing in no time.

Preparations For Black Loong
There are two things that you will definitely want before beginning this fight.First and foremost, you’ll want a few batches of Shock-Quelling Powder. While I always recommend going into a tough fight with medicines like theTiger Subduing Pellets and Evil Repelling Medicament, as they can greatly soften a particularly tough battle, the Shock-Quelling Powder is vital for this encounter, as everything Black Loong does will build up your shock state.
Additionally, put as many points as you can into the Staff Stance. This is one of the few ways you can avoid one of Black Loong’s toughest attacks, especially if you aren’t positioned well. So, reducing the amount of stamina you consume while standing on top of it isveryuseful.

Check out our guide on skills for additional suggestions on the most useful upgrades.
Beyond that, just have the most damaging weapon and most damage-mitigating armor equipped when you face him.If you are fighting Black Loong during the second chapter, you won’t have the Loongscale Armor Set, so you won’t have a specific set of armor that will counter his lightning elemental attacks. However, if you are coming back and fighting him later in the game, by all means, the Loongscale Armor Set is a good choice.

Black Loong’s Attacks
This Dragon has a ton of different attacks he’ll hit you with. His melee attacks aren’t particularly, as they are all telegraphed and none of them are particularly fast. Black Loongs leaping attack is among the slowest you’ll have encountered up to this point. After facing Tiger Vanguard, Black Loong feels like he is underwater.
However, he has a number of attacks that cause shockwaves to ripple across the ground, and these arefarharder to deal with. One sequence will even see Black Loong hammer out a rhythmic beat where being caught by one shockwave will almost certainly lead to you being hit by the ones that follow it (likely killing you in the process). You’ll want to hop on top of rocks when these shockwaves are approaching, but in a pinch, you can also hop on top of your pole to avoid a handful of them.

If you use a stamina-enhancing item, you will be able to last way longer on your pole when avoiding the shockwaves.
Black Loong also has the ability to trap you in a vortex, locking you down, before suddenly hitting you with a massive bolt of lightning. Once again, this does a scary amount of damage, and the lightning bolt is unreactable: you’ll need to preempt it. Or, you can stagger him to interupt it with a heavy attack or by landing a combo while he is immobolized.

Counter
Mace Slam Combo
Black Loong will slam his mace into the ground multiple times before finishing with one last massive slam.
The cadence and rhythm of this sequence make it relatively easy to perfect dodge. You can also just run away.

Lightning Ball
Black Loong will swing his maces over his head, then take a big swipe at you. Each swing will send a ball of lightning after you. After two swings, he will clash his maces together, causing a shockwave of electricity to fire outward.
The mace swipes are thoroughly telegraphed as he swings the mace above his head. If you are close to him, you can dodge them and you won’t even need to worry about the lightning balls he fires off. Just get some distance after the second swing and prepare to jump over the electric shockwave.
Mace Clash
Black Loong will clash his maces above his head, causing a giant explosion of electricity.
This is a tough one to deal with, as the range of each bolt is extremely rangy. So, you need to roll the moment the mace’s clash. However, the immobilize spell will interrupt this attack.
Leaping Attack
Black Loong will swing both of his maces in front of himself before leaping into the air and coming crashing down on your location.
This is one of the slower jump attacks in the game. Most bosses have them, and most of them are far quicker than this one. You should have plenty of time to perfect dodge it.
Whirlwind Dance
Here Black Loong will swing their maces around rapidly, causing a vortex to form around them. This will conclude with an ungodly powerful lightning attack.
Roll away from Black Long in order to avoid being sucked in, then, when they stop swinging their maces, prepare to dodge. This is a tough one to avoid.
Ground Pound Combo
Black Loong will breathe out electricity. This is a sign that they are going to start rhythmically pounding the ground, which will cause a series of shockwaves.
First of all, you can jump over these shockwaves, or you can roll through them. However, some of them are spaced in such a way that jumping over one will cause you to land on another. You can also stand on your pole to avoid them, but this will quickly wear down your stamina. The best counter is to jump on top of a rock in the arena.
How To Beat Black Loong
The key to winning this fight is pretty simple, you want to battle Black Loong away from the rocks. Get up close and personal with Black Loong, and fight him in the clearing. Time his deliberate mace swings while dodging through them. When he starts clashing his maces together (which can be tricky to dodge), get distance, but then immediately approach him again. And at all times, keep him away from the rocks. Why?
So, you are going to be burying your head in his chest, dodging his slower melee attacks, and getting your own licks in.I didn’t find attacking his back to be all that effective typically, as he swings his maces behind his back when you do, and that attack is faster than most of his normal mace swings.
However,if Black Loong starts using his Mace Slam Combo, where he tried to chase you down, rhythmically pounding his maces into the ground as he does so, you should absolutely dodge around him and attack his back.If you are nervous about the timing, you may also just get your distance, but if you are behind him striking his back as he’s performing this sequence you’ll be able to dish out a decent amount of damage. Just peel off of him when he goes for the big attack at the end.
You can absolutely stagger Black Loong, and that is how you are going to deal with his tougher attacks. We previously mentioned that his attack where he starts clashing his maces together can be avoided by getting distance, butyou can also immobilize him when he starts doing it, hit him with a complete combo, and stagger him.
When Black Loong starts swinging his maces in front of himself, and causing that vortex to form, freeze him and deal out as much damage as possible, as you can stagger him out of this attack. If your Immobilize spell is on cooldown, you’ll have to time him. When he stops waving his maces around, and starts crossing them, dodge. The lightning bolt is coming.
Also, heal up before he tosses the lightning bolt. It is a tough dodge, and it does a ton of damage, so make sure you’ll be able to survive the hit at least.
Finally, the big threat is his Ground Pound Combo. When you see him breathing out electricity, you know it is coming. Remember those rocks we were keeping him away from? It is time to sprint to one of them. If you are standing on a rock, the shockwaves will not touch you.If things got sloppy, and there is no rock near you, you can jump or roll some of the shockwaves, and avoid the shockwaves that are clustered by standing on top of your pole. You likely still get hit using this method, but youmaybe able to survive.
While you cantypicallyinterrupt Black Loong by staggering him while he is performing an attack, that won’t work against his Ground Pound Combo. Trying it will likely get you killed.
