In previous versions of theSims 4, divorce was out of reach for Sims in an unhappy marriage. Without using divorce mods or cheats, it just wasn’t possible for your Sims to leave their spouses. However, with the Sims 4: Lovestruck pack, Sims can now get a divorce without their puppeteer going through hoop after hoop to do so.
The good news is that giving your Sims a divorce is incredibly easy to do. The bad news is that it’s incredibly difficult to undo. If you’re struggling to separate your unhappy Sims, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. And if you’re hoping to get them back together, well, we’ve got a comeback plan for that, too.
How To Ask For A Divorce
If your Sims are spending more time fighting each other than loving each other, it may betime to consider separatingthem, for everyone’s sake.
Manual Divorces
Tomanually initiate a divorcebetween your Sims, you don’t need much. Your Sims can be in aperfectly loving, happy relationship, and you canstill have them divorceat any point.
To thoroughly break your Sims' hearts,open the interaction radialby clicking on the target Sim. Then,enter the relationship tab(indicated by an icon of two people), and select the option’Divorce.'
When you have clicked the divorce button, you’ll get apop-upthat says that Sim is divorcing the other, and they willstart an argumentwhich eventually ends in tears. At this point, you will receiveanother pop-upsaying that thedivorce has been finalized.
Your Sims are now legally separated.
Autonomous Divorces
Sims in an unhappy marriage for too long will suffer adecrease in their Romantic Satisfactionlevels. Sims whose Romantic Satisfaction leveldrops too lowwithout any chance of repair, willtake matters into their own handsand opt to break their relationship.
Romantic Satisfactionis the metric that the Lovestruck Pack introduced totrack the successand trajectory of a Sim’s relationship.
Unhappily married Sims canask for a divorceall by themselves. You’ll get atext box or pop-upin your game interface when this happens.
The bad news is that when a Sim decides to ask fordivorce autonomously, there isn’t much you can do to stop it. Youwon’thave an opportunity to reverse the decision and your Sim’s spousewill not undo it, either.
If you want your Sims to be so Romantically Unsatisfied that the non-played Sim asks for a divorce, have the played Simrepeatedly argue, yell at, prank, fight, or perform othermean or jealousy-provoking interactionson their spouse.
There aretwo ways to preventautonomous divorces in the Lovestruck Pack. The hardest method is to keep a constant eye on the Romantic Satisfaction levels andperform repeated maintenanceon your Sims' relationships. The second, much easier, method is toturn off autonomous breakupsin Game Settings.
How To Turn Off Autonomous Divorce
Toturn off autonomous divorcesand breakups, head to thesettings taband select’Game Settings.‘From here, you can change several different autonomy settings for your Sims.
To disable autonomous divorces and breakups, toggle the’Allow Automatic Breakups’button so that there isno checkmarkin the box. Then, select the’Apply Changes’button at the bottom of the screen.
Now,no Simswill automatically break up with the played Sim. To initiate a divorce or breakup, you will have tomanually ask to break upwith your spouse or partner.
How Does Divorce Work?
Once your Sims have divorced each other, theirrelationship will immediately changeto reflect the divorce. Opening the Sim’srelationship panelwill show the’Divorced’ relationship status.
The divorced Sims will now also have a romance bar that isfilled with red, indicating their failed relationship — and the lengths they will have to go to get back together.
Unlike divorce in the real world, there isno integrated process to divide resourcesbetween spouses. After a divorce, the player will have tomanually split up the householdand allocate resources between the two new households.
Sims who are divorcedcan still live together, but they may experiencemore negative moodletswhen around their former spouse.
If you want to divide a household or its resources, you will need togo to the ‘Manage Worlds’ screenand enter thehousehold managementscreen. From here, select the divorced household anduse the transfer arrowsto split the household.
There areno custody arrangements between parents, so you will need to decide for yourself where the children in the divorced household will go.
While you are transferring household members between the split couple’s new household, you can alsotransfer funds. Type the amount of money you would like to transfer to the new household and then select thetransfer arrow.
If you want to customize the amount of money a household has, you may use the cheat’money x’in your cheat bar to give that household whatever amount you’d like.
How To Undo A Divorce
There is currentlyno way to undo a divorceonce it has been asked for. The only way to ‘undo’ the divorce is tohave your Sims get back togetherthe hard way,install romance modsthat allow for second-chance mechanics and marriage cheats, orreturn to an old saveand restore your save file.
The most base-game-friendly way to undo a divorce is for your Sim and their ex tomake up, apologize, and slowly startfalling back in love. It will be a long and arduous process for your Sims to get back together, but it is possible.
