Ever sinceGenshin Impactgot past Inazuma, HoYoverse has been releasing various new region-specific mechanics to make the exploration unique and fun. You’ll find some of these mechanics while exploring these regions while others can be found in the character kits hailing from the respective regions.

With the release of Natlan in the Version 5.0 update, two such mechanics were introduced in the form of Nightsoul and Phlogiston. It’s highly important to understand these mechanics if you want to properly explore Natlan or use the characters from this area.

Everything You Need To Know About Phlogiston

Phlogiston is one of the first mechanics that you’ll get introduced to while entering Natlan, andit’s also the most important mechanic of the area. Whenever your character is in Natlan, you’ll see an extra bar above their HP bar that gets filled up in orange color at times. This orange color shows the amount of Phlogiston you currently have.

This is essentially a high-temperature thermal energy that can be acquired by activating various points around Natlan, going through Phlogiston particles randomly scattered in the area, orcoming close to a Teleport Waypoint or a Statue of the Seven. Once you’ve acquired this energy, you can mainly use it during Saurian Indwelling.

Some Natlan characters can alsoget extra Phlogiston with specific taskslike collecting any item in the area with Mualani.

Suarian Indwelling is an important mechanic of Natlan where you can morph into various Saurians anduse them for easier climbing, swimming, or grappling. When you first morph into a Saurian, they’ll have their own energy bar on the right, which slowly depletes as you perform various actions with them.

Once this bar is depleted, your Phlogiston will slowly start getting consumed instead. There are also certain devices in Natlan that can only be activated with Phlogiston, and itcan also be used as a replacement for Nightsoul Energy for Natlan units.

Nightsoul Blessing, Explained

Now that you’ve understood how Phlogiston works, the next step is to understand the Nightsoul mechanic. This is a unique mechanic that every Natlan character makes use of. When these characters use a specific ability, they enter the Nightsoul’s Blessing state, whichgives them a certain amount of Nightsoul Energy that gets depleted slowly.

Most characters get the highest value from their kit during the Nightsoul state, so you’d want to keep it up as long as possible. You can also enter this state by switching to thesecharacters at specific times like sprinting, swimming, orjumping for Mualani. Once the Nightsoul Energy runs out, the character comes out of this state.

Of course, if you’re playing these characters in Natlan, your Phlogiston will start getting consumedafter your Nightsoul Energy ends.

Nightsoul Burst, Explained

This is the main mechanic that’s unclear for most players in Genshin Impact since it has some confusing wording. Nightsoul Burst doesn’t mean using a character’s Burst in the Nightsoul state. In fact, it’s a new mechanic entirely that triggerswhen you have Natlan characters in the partyand any of your party members deal Elemental DMG.

When a Nightsoul Burst triggers, you’ll see a white explosion on your screen. This Burst has a party-wide cooldown of 18, 12, and nine seconds when you haveone, two, and three Natlan characters in the team respectively. However, this effect doesn’t do anything by itself and mostly relies on the characters you’re using.

For example,Mualani can increase her Burst DMGbased on the Nightsoul Bursts usedwithin a 20-second time frame.
