Summary
For years, fans have been clamoring for a Viewtiful Joe 3 fromCapcom. And if not a proper sequel, then, at the very least,a collection of the first two games similar to Mega Man’s legacy anthologies. As it turns out, the creator of Viewtiful Joe feels the same way. What’s more, he also wants an Okami sequel as well.
In a wide-ranging conversation with fellow developer Ikumi Nakamura, legendary creator Hideki Kamiya shared his hopes for sequels to his creations. Kamiya famously directedResident Evil 2andDevil May Crybefore helping create Viewtiful Joe and its sequel Viewtiful Joe 2, as well asOkami. He then went on to establishPlatinumGames, the team behindBayonettaandNier: Automata. Kamiyahas since left PlatinumGames.
Kamiya Wants A Viewtiful Joe Sequel As Much As We Do
In the interview, which has since been transcribed by PC Gamer, Kamiya issued a plea to Capcom to let him see a sequel through for Okami and Viewtiful Joe.
“The story ended midway, so leaving it as it is, I feel bad,” Kamiya said. “Creators, I think, have the duty to create sequels fans are wanting to see. Although I sound all high and mighty, it’s been awhile since I’ve moved on from Okami. But I still feel like I haven’t fulfilled my duty. So Capcom, please, let’s do it together.”
To this point, Capcom hasn’t done much with Okami. The only notable Okami related project was the HD remaster that made its way to the PS3 generation, then later the PS4 generation and then the Switch. A lack of Okami-related projects might have more to do with sales than anything.Famously, back in 2008, Capcom executive Christian Svensson said, “I think we need a lot more people buying the current version before we seriously consider a sequel.”
Kamiya has the same thoughts about Viewtiful Joe, which did receive a sequel, though it did have a somewhat open ending. He joked about the reasons why the superhero title didn’t appear in a Capcom survey. “It’s only because eight people have played Viewtiful Joe,” Kamiya joked. “That game also ended mid-way, so I need to finish it. The survey that Capcom did last time didn’t have Viewtiful Joe as an option, so I sent a response saying, ‘I am Hideki Kamiya, let me make Viewtiful Joe’s sequel.'”
While rife with jokes, it’s a candid conversation that highlights the deep desires of creators to return to their roots. For example, for as many projects as Hideo Kojima has going on,he is returning to his roots in the action-espionage genre with Physint. In other words, Kamiya isn’t alone in his feelings. More so, he hopes that his words can help stir interest.
“This kind of thing ignites something and causes a stir which could lead to actually starting another project,” Kamiya said. “We want to take chances on miracles like that.” Here’s hoping Capcom is willing to take that chance.
