Over the weekend, the game dropped to “Mixed” reviews on Steam againafter an update went live thatnerfed flamethrowersand added useless anti-tank mines. It’s an issue that’s been bubbling since launch, controversial balance tweak after controversial balance tweak, so players are banding together to protest in-game by letting the Automaton armies reach Super Earth.

They’re a stone’s throw away from the home planet, the closest they’ve ever been, and the community’s response is a resounding, ‘Eh, let it happen.’ Of course,Helldivers 2 is run by a game master called Joelwho dictates how the story plays out, so some unforeseen accident could stop the Automaton in their tracks.

In fact, a lot of fans aren’t expecting anything to happen. But in letting them get this close, players are making their frustration heard by pigeonholing developer Arrowhead into coming up with a believable excuse as to why the Automaton forces can’t plant their clanking metal boots on our soil.

What Even Happens If They Take Super Earth?

We don’t know what an Automaton invasion of Super Earth would look likein terms of gameplay. The big assumption on many of these threads is that we’ll be deployed at home to hold back the invading forces, fighting to reclaim lost planets from the centre of the map. But things might not be that in-depth.

Going by the first Helldivers, we could simply… lose the war. In that case, the entire thing starts over and we’re back to square one. Given that we still haven’t faced the Illuminate, the elusive third faction that continues to be datamined, returning to the early days would be a big blow.

But if Arrowhead wants the sequel to have more in-depth Super Earth gameplay after all, there’s another big question—is it even ready yet?

It’s very unlikely that the Automaton or Terminid were supposed to get this close this fast, so Super Earth may not even be in a playable state yet. In that case, Joel will no doubt try to move the enemy away from the home planet, but players are planning to counter that by strategically controlling certain sectors to funnel the Automaton back to Super Earth. Given how close they are, it shouldn’t be long before we find out how Arrowhead will respond.
