A lot of video game protagonists are blessed with special abilities that aid them in combat, exploration, investigations, or just general life. While these characters are generally very different from one another, there is typically some crossover in their powers. For example, a lot of gaming protagonists have supernatural strength or the ability to fly. It’s no surprise that these sorts of powers are commonly seen because they’re very similar to the sort of skills you see in comic books.

Yet, there are some gaming characters that have powers you won’t often see in comics or anywhere else. They’re unique, mainly because they’re very bizarre. From Max Caulfield toBayonetta, here are some notable examples of video game heroes with odd abilities.

8Max Caulfield

Life Is Strange

Max Caulfield’s main power is the ability to rewind time several seconds. That isn’t too strange, asseveral characters in fiction can rewind time. However, what is odd is what she can do with a photograph.

For some reason, if she stares at a photo of herself strongly enough, she can transport her consciousness back to that time. Yet, it isn’t quite full-fledged time travel since once she travels, she can’t leave the area where the photo was taken. It’s a weird limitation for an already odd ability.

7Morgan Yu

Prey

Prey is one ofthe most underrated first-person shootersout there. Part of its greatness is down to how fun some of your unlockable abilities are. One of the strangest is the Mimic Matter power. This allows protagonist Morgan Yu to transform into an everyday item. For instance, you’re able to become something like a coffee mug.

Without going into spoilers, the game does provide an explanation as to why you can do this. However, it doesn’t make turning into random items any less strange. The power does let you solve some puzzles and trick some enemies, though.

6Bayek Of Siwa, Kassandra, Alexios, Eivor, And Basim

Assassin’s Creed Series

Throughout the Assassin’s Creed games, the main protagonists have always had a power called Eagle Vision. Essentially, it’s a supernatural level of awareness of their surroundings.

However, in the later games, it transforms into something more unusual, as the likes of Bayek, Kassandra, Alexios, Eivor, and Basim actually gain the ability to see through their pet bird’s eyes. So, their eagle or raven can fly up in the air, and the protagonist gets a literal bird’s eye view of the area. What a strange evolution of a power that was originally just about having superhuman senses.

5Max Payne

Max Payne Series

For the most part, the Max Payne games are gritty first-person shooters about a New York detective turned vigilante. They don’t seem like they would include any supernatural powers. That is until Max jumps in the air, and time slows down, allowing him to pick his shots.

Now, this might not seem too weird since plenty of games include bullet time. Yet, it’s strange because of the type of games the Max Payne titles are. They’re generally very serious and down-to-earth, so you wouldn’t expect the main character in them to have what is essentially a superpower.

4Lisa Simpson

The Simpsons Game

In The Simpsons Game, you can play as the main members of The Simpsons Family - besides Maggie. Because this is an action-platform game, though, the developers had to give the family members special abilities that they don’t have in the series.

The most bizarre of these skills is Lisa’s Hand of Buddha. When activated, a giant version of Lisa’s hand appears in the sky, enabling her to lift large objects, flick enemies away, and even electrocute them. So, she temporarily becomes a god.

3Alan Wake

Alan Wake Series

The titular character in Alan Wake is a famous author who is mainly known for writing a popular action thriller series. So, he’s known as a pretty accomplished writer. He’s so good, in fact, that in-universe, he technically writes the two main Alan Wake games.

This is because whatever Wake writes becomes reality. For example, if he writes that someone will get hit by a car, they will get hit by a car. Now, there are limitations, as he isn’t just able to write what he wants, which adds to how strange the power is.

2Bayonetta

Bayonetta Series

The Bayonetta titles are some ofthe best character action games ever. As it’s a genre known for outlandish action, it’s no surprise to see wacky powers in these games. That said, Bayonetta’s Wicked Weaves ability is strange, even for the genre it’s in.

This is because it’s an ability that allows the character to summon demons using her hair as a conduit. The summoning demons aspect isn’t too weird for a video game, but the involvement of her hair is unusual. After all, the summoned demons arrive wrapped in hair, which is a pretty odd sight.

1The New Kid

South Park: The Stick Of Truth And South Park: The Fractured But Whole

In classic South Park fashion, the two Ubisoft RPGs based on the show contain plots that seem very simple, but they eventually spiral out of control. In both titles, a bit of live-action roleplay fun turns into a much deeper plot and has you fighting adults and dangerous creatures.

Thankfully, you’re playing as the New Kid, who can compete with zombies and secret service agents due to their superhuman flatulence. Yes, they have special farting abilities. It’s also mentioned that the New Kid can make friends much faster than the average person, which is also treated as a superpower. Both of those powers are pretty bizarre.
