Summary
Fortnitemay be the furthest thing from a proper fighting game, but somehow, theMarvel vs. Capcomtributes keep flowing in.Already we reported how Cyclops and Jonesy recreated the iconic handshake from X-Men vs. Street Fighter, the precursor to Marvel vs. Capcom.
The original handshake saw Cyclops and Ryu dapping each other up,and has since been recreated for the upcoming Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics cover.
Now, eagle-eyed Fortnite fans have spotted another Marvel vs. Capcom tribute. This time, the tribute is centered aroundthe big bad of Chapter 5 Season 4, Doctor Doom.
Doctor Doom Is Diving Feet First Into Fortnite
As first spotted on Twitter by an avid fighting game fan, the Doctor Doom that exists in Fortnite has the same “foot dive” move that the Doctor Doom in Marvel vs. Capcom has in his arsenal. Among Marvel vs. Capcom fans, the “foot dive” has been an essential move for the Fantastic Four villain, and, in the process, has become something of an internet meme.
Beginning with his appearance in Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes, Doctor Doom has a “foot dive” move, where he literally dives feet first into his opponent. That moved upped the ante in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, where Doom could potentially spam the move.
It’s unclear why exactly he has a foot dive, though it might have something to do with Doom’s own personality. Believing himself to be the superior being, Doom might disagree with using his hands to fight an opponent as they’re not worthy.
Either way, it’s an incredible level of attention to detail on the part ofEpic Games. Given that Fortnite is essentially the modern-day metaverse in the same way that crossover games like Marvel vs. Capcom helped bridge the gap between fandoms, it only makes sense to pay tribute whenever possible. After all, crossovers like MvC showcased the potential of varying IPs that, on the surface, have nothing in common, coming together in the name of fun.
With all of these Marvel vs. Capcom references, along with Capcom’s own desire to return to the series, surely all of this is a sign of a future game, right?Fans have already begun constructing their dream rosters if any inspiration is needed. And with Disney back to fully embracing all of Marvel, there’s no telling how packed a potential roster will be.
